Payton did not model our offense after Seattle's so he must not have been as obsessed as you propose. There is a term that has been used in the NFL for a long time, before Payton was a HC, "copy cat league." If your defense stinks you look at defenses that do not stink and try to model them to succeed. That's not obsessing, that's being wise. Rob Ryan was the one who took the 4th ranked D and decided to "get funky" with it and it blew up in his face.

I guess allowing 24 points to the red hot eagles who was scoring much more than that was bad defense too. |
