Can it be done? Need help?
Billy,
I did like the debate idea (in a sense), but it seemed to ruffle too many feathers. Here\'s how it might be packaged. 1. A list of topics is generated by the board or selected based on that week\'s Super Saints Weekly maybe. One of them is selected in some impartial way - maybe Halo picks it. 2. Each week, people say if they\'d like to participate in that debate. Four members are selected at random for that week\'s debate (maybe there could be some rule that makes sure everyone gets a turn eventually). 3. There is an exclusive thread for the debate, such that only the moderator of the debate for that week and the two teams can enter. This way, people who aren\'t interested don\'t have to read it, and the forum is still just the way we like it. No reason that the other members can\'t discuss the same topic in the usual way - as could the debators - in the forum. 4. Each member of the debate gets to post once before the other three do - perhaps an order could be established. 5. The debate lasts for only two or three days - this way it doesn\'t take up those valued poster\'s time on the regular forum. 6. The \"winner\" of the debate is left undetermined. It would be up to the individuals who chose to read the debate thread to decide for themselves who won. This way, everyone gets to play at least some of the time, it isn\'t much (if any) of a distraction to the usual stuff on the forum - which is awesome, and we don\'t have to worry about \"winners\" and such being annoying in the regular forum. I for one would be interested in reading maybe one thread for a few days that I couldn\'t join in on, so long as it was well structured, I think interesting stuff could come to light. However, it would be annoying to me to lose four good members for a whole week if they got really wrapped up in the debate instead of making their usual posts. This is also open to anyone who is interested and very time constrained, so as to not disrupt the usual flow of the board. At any rate, I think that is what might work best, if it were to be done. I don\'t really understand the argument that this would kill the board or significantly change it, as it would only be one thread maybe for a two days - everything else would be the same as always. At any rate, if it were to happen, I would like to see less emphasis on \"winning\" and have it be very time delimited so it doesn\'t effect other things. Also, people should get the chance to try it out if they\'d like - if not, same ol\' same ol\' - nothing wrong with that. |

Why don\'t you just do it and quit talking about it. Here\'s an idea. Gumbo, you and JKool can work out the format and stuff via PM. Once you got it all set up, start a thread announcing the sign up for the debate, the fornat, etc., and then do it. As time goes on, you can refine it as people see necessary. You can try whatever you want, just do it.

Good point LB.
I\'m not really sold one way or the other, just for the record. |
