Why's that? It just gives the defense one more thing to fret over. I would like to see it used a couple of times in the preseason just to force DC's to focus on one more thing in preparation. Then we hold off until the Super Bowl to use it.

Three reasons off the top of my head: My first is that it only worries someone if it actually works. Think back to the number of times that trick plays actually worked at that level of play where the guy throwing hasn't actually been a college QB in the past. I mean trick plays in the NFL? Really? Success is pretty rare. These guys are pros who've seen most everything between YAFL and today. You can point at our onsides kick during the Superbowl. That's just one success. Then how many unsuccessful trick plays can you honestly bring to mind? Secondly, Mark's a little... well volatile. He seems to not always think things through as he's on the field. He gets out there to do that and his adrenaline could see that ball just about anywhere but where it should be. I think I'd rather see AP or Alvin in charge of the ball if they really have to do that play. Thirdly, there's a reason good QBs are so rare...

; Your story isn't over yet ;

Yeah sometimes the tricks can trick yourself. Like the fumble on an errant reverse to reverse pitch, lol. We have had some of those. I like trick plays, but if you don't catch em sleeping you need to make the smart play.

I think that's why Guido said he'd like to see them in pre season. If they work, then defensive coordinators all season will have to think twice about the possibility and if they don't work, it's preseason so no harm no foul.

That was exactly the point I was making. Nothing to lose.

There's no defensive coordinator who is looking at preseason tape and saying holy **** they just threw a half back pass...we better be careful with what we do.

Did we do a lot of onside kicks in 09 preseason?

NFL DC's look at every potential opponent's play, pre-season, regular season, or in the case of the Patriots, even during closed practices.

Let me point out another RB that Brees played with, LaDainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson was never a QB as far as I know and he was 8 for 12 in those trick plays with 7 resulting in TD's, including a TD pass to Brees himself.

Just saying.

Good point Guido. And also a good point about it being preseason Utah. I just don't really like trick plays (or pitch backs near the goal line for that matter) very much. Plus I really, really don't think Ingram's the guy to try it with.
