People are watching match ups. It doesn't take the starting QB being in to recognize when players are doing their jobs at a high level. People should be encouraged. This same kind of defensive performance was turned in against the 49ers in the preseason when we went to the Super Bowl. A trained eye can see the potential.

Not really sure what game you were watching last night.

Special teams play greatly improved.
Linebackers are greatly improved.
Kamara already looks the part.
Coaching.
Pressure is coming (Kikaha & Okafor)
Last year we couldn't even sniff a QB in pre season ... last night, 8 sacks.

Good Lord, what game were you watching?

A preseason game against QBs and linemen that won't be on the field unless the Chargers are really in trouble.

The first quarter of the regular season will be the true test. 3 away games. 2 playoff teams from last year. And the SB champs. Come out of that 4-0 or 3-1 with dominant performances, then we can have a conversation of where the Saints fit in 2017.

What I saw was encouraging. But it's the preseason. Many of the players out there will be on benches, practice squads, or in the stands come September.

If this defense sacks Brady 8 times and holds the Patriots to less than 200 yards passing September 17th, then that's a defensive game worth being excited about.

Super Bowl Championships: New Orleans Saints:1, Carolina:0, Atlanta Chokers: STILL ZERO

Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good.

SFIAH,

It's all about changing the mindset and culture of this very young defensive team. Pre season or not, winning starts somewhere. I'm encouraged to see where this team was this time last year to now. No need to wait until Sept 17th before getting excited about this defense.

Nothing is easy at this level.

As I said, I am encouraged. But this is still all practice and evaluation, often with players on both sides of the ball that won't be there come the regular season. I know that breaking into the NFL is hard. But playing actual games is much harder.

I believe that we as fans wants the Saints to be among the elite teams in the NFL in 2017. But until they actually compete against those elite teams with the personnel and schemes designed to beat them, it's truly an unknown as to how it'll all come out.

Agreed. I hate the preseason and talk as much crap about it as anyone. I can't stand that they make these teams play 4 games when all of the work that needs to be done is covered in practice and scrimmages. But with that said, preseason is where most of us fans get our only looks at the team before the real season begins, and I think we're all educated enough to recognize talent, and improvement, without jumping to too many conclusions.

The games are meaningless, but the individual performances matter, regardless of competition. All opinions have to be adjusted relative to the context of preseason and I, like you, see no reason to wait till September 17th to decide that there might be reason for optimism. Or pessimism, for that matter. I just happen to be optimistic, based on what I've seen.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

This is what I told my brother last night. He's already trying to figure out how to travel to Minnesota next February. I'm figuring that it'll take until mid November to really understand where the Saints are. The opening stretch of 4 games is brutal with 3 road games, including a trip to London, along with hosting the Patriots.

I believe the 2nd quarter of the season, with matchups against the Lions (which did not go well last year), GB, Chicago, and the Bucs will define the season for the Saints. Records of 4-0 or 3-1 points towards a playoff run. Less than that will make it iffy.

So only time will reveal if the real regular season starting defense is going to be up to the task. Fortunately we don't need too much. Decent against the run, getting off the field on 3rd down, a few takeaways, and frankly just being an average NFL defense everywhere else will be good enough.

Take QBs out of the equation. It was our DEfensive line and linebackers against their offensive line, tight ends, etc and our guys dominated in the trenches. Something this defense has lacked for years. That's where games are won. If Rivers was in one could argue that maybe he could have gotten rid of the ball quicker or avoided the pressure better and maybe we would have only had 5 or 6 sacks. I'll take 6 sacks any day. I saw what I wanted to see and it is a vast improvement. It was one game and certainly don't drink the cool aid but it was a good sign to see we seemed to have improved in the very areas we needed to.
Next weeks game will be more telling. I want to see how our guys against Watt.
If they can hold their own up front on that side of the ball I'll open the pack of cool aid and pull out a glass. Not saying I'll actually turn on the faucet but I'll be thirsty.
