Saints among teams planning private workout with Baker Mayfield
 

The New Orleans Saints had a formal interview with former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield at the NFL combine last week, but the team is apparently hoping to learn more about Mayfield as the draft process continued.

According to a Sports Illustrated story detailing Mayfield's combine experience, the Saints are among a group of teams planning a private workout with Mayfield in Norman, Okla., at some point after the Sooners' pro day next Wednesday.

The Browns, Jets, Dolphins are making similar plans with Mayfield, per the report.

The Saints typically interview all of the top quarterbacks at the combine, but a private workout would be indication of legitimate interest in Mayfield, the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner. Most draft projections have Mayfield off the board before the Saints' first pick at No. 27, but if he falls, perhaps the Saints think he'd be a candidate to succeed Drew Brees.

Nice but damn, I don't think Baker falls outside of the top 10.

Side note - NFL analyst Greg Cosell did a recent review of all of the QB's in the 2018 draft and he is really high on BM. Raved about his accuracy, timing and pocket presence.

Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller, on NFL Radio's Moving the Chains, couldn't say enough about his accuracy and knowledge. They too mentioned timing and pocket presence in a manner of speaking.

We have no ability to get him other than trading our whole draft and even that might not work. He's going top 10, maybe top 5.

6 days and counting until d-Day. We sign drew before the 14th or we get a cap hit of 18 million reguardless if he signs.

No reason to do the deal before the last moment. It would be best to have all options still open until then. Something may come up that requires the deal to be structured in a certain manner. That's why I feel the bulk of the deal is already worked out with cap implications still flexible.

We did the same with Patrick Mahomes last year because we planned on drafting him if he was available.

Kansas City had the same pick as us last year (27) and to trade up to 10 it only cost them #27, #91 and this year’s 1st.

If Payton wants him bad enough and he’s still available at 10 I wouldn’t be surprised if we made that same trade.

KC did it because they were moving on from their QB. If they know and believe what Brees says about playing well into his forties then it would not make sense.

No way he falls to us.

But Saints kick tires and talk/work out EVERYONE. So its no surprise.

If we make a run at him we'd have to think we'd have to move up to #1 as the first oppitunity to snag him. At what cost???
