This is why the position was most likely considered a long tern need and not a short term need. Edge rusher and offensive line depth were more immediate needs. Upgrades to the special teams were also needed as we lost some critical players in those areas over the past two seasons. Anything after that had to be looked at as best player available. The stars just never aligned for choosing a TE, it appears, and was also implied by Payton himself post draft.

Re: Fleener Dead Cap

I hope the front office keeps Fleener this season. We need the best 53 on the roster at all times. Especially considering he's been paid over half of his salary.

Double (2X's) if we can't get the same caliber for what it will cost in DEAD MONEY. I wouldn't cut CF this season.

The 5 concussions he had last season is a BIG concern for me though.

So hard to get a good TE. From last year, maybe 3-4 were great then the rest...meh. Fleener was a good move at the time. He's still decent but at 30, maybe he bounces back some but not much IMO.

Watson used to have a lot of concussion issues and he's still playing. Amendola too.

Ben has had a total of 5 concussions since 2005.

Fleener had 5 last season (2017). Huge difference.

Re: Fleener Dead Cap

I think we’ll just completely rebuild the TE position next year. Hill, Hoomanawanui and Watson will all be free agents and cutting Fleener will be much more palatable financially.

In the meantime, Deon Yelder will probably get a year of development on the practice squad and maybe be part of the solution next year.

Re: Fleener Dead Cap

I just don't have any faith in Fleener. He has a slow response time and looked outright lazy at training camp. He did not take the next step like we had hoped when we brought him in on a big contract that we now to get out of. Unfortunately, we will probably keep him and look at cutting our losses next year.

Maybe Dan Campbell should let Curtis Johnson whack Fleener with his whoopin' stick for awhile so he can toughen up some......just don't hit him in the head.

I won't miss Hill
$2.4m per year is a lot for 15 catches
