Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints Training Camp

Take One: Modest Practice

It terms of overall energy...maybe it’s because the freshness of camp has worn off and it’s starting to feel like a grind...

Take two: Offense outplays defense in red zone

Red zone made up the majority of the team work, and the offense clearly outplayed the defense here. Drew Brees threw a dime to Michael Thomas on a slot fade for a touchdown. Tom Savage connected with Boston Scott in the flat for a score. Taysom Hill hit Josh Huff in the end zone. Then, Brees hit Alvin Kamara on an option route for a touchdown that was almost too easy.

Overall, the defense had gotten the upper hand in the last few practices. So, it was good to see the offense battle back Thursday.

Take Three: Cold Truck

The Saints had a new arrival at camp Thursday...a cold truck (basically the back of an 18-wheeler). The temperature is 25 degrees inside and designed to help player get their core temperature...Payton told me after it only takes five to ten minutes to get the players core temperature down to the desired 98.6 degrees..Recovery is everything in camp...

Take Four: Loewen closes practice with impact

Mitchell Loewen had an eventful close to practice. He had a sack of Tom Savage then got into a scuffle with Trevor Darling after a play. On the final play, Loewen sacked J.T. Barrett. Loewen is an intriguing player in that he can play end and three technique tackle. His strongest position may be at the three-tech. He actually made the team last year but spent it on injured reserve.

Take Five: Other Observations

  • Max Unger left practice Thursday early. No reason was given. In his place, Josh LeRibeus and Will Clapp got snaps with the first team at center.

  • Taysom Hill kept the ball on a zone read and gained significant yardage. Sean Payton said afterward that if Hill was in a game, they would mix in a few of those type of plays because it’s an area where he clearly excels.

  • I’m not worried one bit about Marshon Lattimore. But if I’m being honest, he’s gotten beat quite a few times this camp.

  • Defensive tackle Jay Bromley keeps helping himself. He dropped in coverage and batted a pass that A.J. Klein intercepted.

  • Alex Anzalone was beat badly on the Kamara option route described above but he also made a PBU in the back of the end zone on a pass to Michael Hoomanawanui.

  • TommyLee Lewis, Brandon Tate, Austin Carr, Boston Scott, Alvin Kamara and Josh Huff all received reps at punt returner. I’d say Tate has a real chance to catch on the roster in this position.

I feel good about Patrick Robinson as he's shown he can get it done in the NFL...

If Robinson stumbles, you call Dennis Allen on his ability, or rather inability, to have the vision and skills to make success with the talent he has...

There've been subtle position shifts, scheme responsibilities asked of successful free agents when they arrive here different from what they're signed...

As my friend would say, why are we beating round pegs into square holes, again?

I'm not saying that's definitively what's happening, but they're been some subtle clues dropped in interviews that have given me pause to question more...

Good rotational piece & I hope Jay continues to grind. He can really help us in the trenches.
