Take One: Competitive Practice

...At times when you get to this point of camp the grind and monotony of hitting the same players everyday can lead to lethargy. It hasn’t really happened with the Saints all that much. I can only think of one practice so far that lacked energy...

Take Two: TommyLee Takes Over, Again

Just when I thought Lewis was coming back down to earth a bit, he stepped up with an outstanding effort Saturday. First, he took an end around and made a cut in the open field for a nice gain. Then, He beat Marshon Lattimore on a double move during seven-on-seven. During two-minute, Drew Brees hit him in the end zone for a score.

Take Three: Will Clapp holds his own

When I noticed #64 in with the first team during team drills, I made a point to observe most of his reps. Playing both the left and right guard, the youngster more than held his own against a very active defensive front. There was one play, from the right when he went toe-to-toe with Sheldon Rankins. It was a quality rep on both sides. By Clapp not getting blown back he allowed Mark Ingram to spring it to the outside for good yardage. On a screen pass to Ingram, Clapp got to the second level and got just enough of Alex Anzalone to help spring Ingram again. On a separate rep against David Onyemata, Clapp looked to get beat initially but fought back to keep Onyemata from completely disrupting the play.

Seventh round draft picks aren’t guaranteed anything, regardless of where they come from. But in Clapp’s case, he’s taking advantage of every opportunity he’s gotten and putting some quality tape together.

Take Four: Marcus Williams shines

Every practice Williams makes a play that stands out. He is always around the ball. On Saturday, in red zone, Williams took advantage of an overthrow by Brees in the end zone and picked it off. Brees praised him after practice even saying he has some the traits that Ed Reed had.

Take Five: Other Observations

  • Ken Crawley got the best of Michael Thomas in individual drills. He didn’t allow a completion though he was flagged for pass interference on a fourth throw.

  • Brees connected with Ted Ginn, Jr. during red zone over Crawley. He also hit Alvin Kamara for a score.

  • Craig Roberston had back-to-back stuffs on run plays.

  • Max Unger had an awkward snap that led to a fumble recovery by Alex Anzalone.
