Why does that really matter? All 32 practice squads are a shared NFL resource. Any team can sign any player off any practice squad at any time. The only requirement is that you must sign a practice squad player to your 53 man roster. The protection that comes into play is that if a team attempts to claim a player off your practice squad, you have the option to promote them to your 53 man roster blocking that move. On the other hand, as you mentioned, if you later decide to demote him back to the practice squad he would first have to clear waivers and at that point you cannot protect him. That would be my worry.

In other words, I conditionally agree ... if we need the guy, bring him up, but be prepared to have him as one of your 53 for the remainder of the season.
