It was also reported that the possibility was entertained, as well as others, but was never any sort of a given.

Payton knew that he had Drew for as long as he wants him (two to three more years at least) and was in win now mode already. A first round QB would eat up far too much cap to be sitting behind Brees in that scenario.

All that said, it will be interesting to see what becomes of Mahomes and his early performances as the season progresses.
