Details have been reported on New Orleans Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s September contract restructure, per Nick Underhill of the Advocate. Before we get too deep into the weeds on this, know that it is not a contract extension for Bridgewater; he is still on schedule to be a free agent in March 2019. But there are some things to be learned from this.

As we learned last month, Bridgewater agreed to a restructure of his contract, freeing up badly-needed salary cap space for the Saints in 2018 while earning him a $4-million signing bonus. Now we have details for what this means moving forward.

Per Underhill, Bridgewater’s contract will expire 10 days prior to the start of the NFL’s 2019 fiscal year: which would be Mar. 3, with the league opening its 2019 calendar on Mar. 13. So Bridgewater is on a one-year contract with some small future salary cap hits, nothing more. Once Mar. 3 arrives, he’s free to negotiate with other teams and potentially leave New Orleans.

Why didn’t the Saints just make this deal the real thing? There’s any number of reasons. Maybe they don’t know whether Drew Brees will be around next year, and don’t want to already be on the books with $25-million committed to him and another $22-million for his successor. Maybe New Orleans wants to wait and get other pending free agents – like Mark Ingram – handled first. Maybe Bridgewater himself wants to wait it out and see if there’s interest from other teams. We just don’t know.

Read the rest here ...

So the Saints FO is trading a long term contract vs an expiring one? ? Freeing up cap space for 2018?

Re: Details on Teddy Bridgewater's Saints contract

Maybe the NFL will rig the Superbowl in 2019 so Drew Brees wins another Superbowl so he will retire.
(just like the record breaking TD pass against the Washington Redskins)

Having said that, I doubt Drew will retire since renewing his contract at $30 million for 2019 is stupid if he can still play. FACT, he loves the game and will play as long as he can. PLUS, the NFL would NEVER RIG A SUPERBOWL FOR THE SAINTS TO WIN.

What was that I was smoking?

Whatever. Brees is playing great. He is not retiring. I also do not like extending a contract to someone who has never played a down in a real game. That is stupid. I like him but no point it locking into something. We could find some undrafted QB next year that is gold. Then what? I would like to see him traded before the deadline. We need to shore up either defenders this season or get back into the draft early rounds. Two areas where we are weak.

I'm wondering now - which is different than what I was wondering then - if Bridgewater is here for this year and gone. Or is Taysum gone? Sans some draft picks are we going to trade either one of them at some point to get some of our draft mojo back? I just don't see both of them on the roster next year, but I'm 110% speculating.

No telling. I'm sure 49'ers are asking about him. If we could get a 3 and a conditional I think that would be a good deal.

Re: Details on Teddy Bridgewater's Saints contract

As the tweet explained, the future years are automatically voided and just allowed Loomis to only one third of his guaranteed amount actually counting toward the 2018 cap. But, it does give some flexibility to, if wanted/needed, hold onto his rights past 2018 ... at no additional cost.

It could mean absolutely nothing. Or not.

Yes, '19 and '20 are voided, and TB gets 4 million now. Lowers our cap hit for him from 5 m to 2.3 m.
If we don't sign him in '19 it will be a 4 million dead cap hit
