PFF grades Marcus Davenport as NFL's best rookie pass rusher
New Orleans Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport hasn’t played in almost three weeks, but no other rookie has threatened his seat at the top of the class. Per Pro Football Focus’ thorough evaluations, Davenport is the NFL’s best rookie edge defender.
Davenport went down after logging 4 sacks and 7 other quarterback hits, but his real success has come in run defense. 5 of his 11 tackles have dropped opponents for loss of yards, and PFF’s in-house “run stop percentage” stat grades him best among his rookie peers at 9.8-percent. Compare that to the production of other highly-drafted rookies like Denver Broncos first round pick Bradley Chubb, and Tennessee Titans second round draftee Harold Landry. Chubb has twice the sacks (8) and a few more hits (11), but he’s seen a significantly higher snap count even before Davenport was sidelined by injury. Landry, billed as the most pro-ready pass rusher by draft enthusiasts on social media, has logged just 2 sacks and 5 other hits. It’s clear why the Saints valued Davenport so highly, and these results from PFF just do a little more to validate the call to trade up for him. USA Today ![]() Saints did their homework on him. | |
