2019 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I can’t wait to get LB Kaden Elliss back next season. His potential is through the roof with the elite measurables and NFL bloodline. I’d really like to see him take over the strong side LB position next year....

We'll have DeMario Davis, Kaden Elliss, Kiko Alonso, and Alex Anzalone (who'll still be on his rookie contract) all under contract...

Given Anzalone's health hx, suspect we may see a transition to Ellis; and don't forget Chase Hansen, undrafted, and like Anzalone, likely didn't get correct medical treatment for preexisting injury...

We have an interesting situation with Kiko Alonso next season. He’ll be in the last year of his contract with a $6.4 mil cap hit. We would save all of that with no dead money by releasing him. That’s not to say we should cut him, but it’s a nice chunk of change.

He could also be restructured as part of an extension and that hit could be reduced to a fraction of the $6.4M for 2020.

That's the program I'd get behind...

The $6.4M could be converted to a signing bonus and spread out over a five year contract with the first two years guaranteed. A low base salary the first year could easily get the cap hit for 2020 down to under $2M.

I was mistaken, he's 29 yo, information I'd read misinformed and had him as 26; so I wouldn't extend him by more than a year, two tops...

But you're right, guarantee extra money and at his age, I'm sure we could cut his cap number to a third over three years...
