Edwards was signed before other edge rushers because of his versatility he brings as both a DT3 and SDE. In the depth chart excerpt I have here, you can kinda see where we are and illustrates my point... DEFENSE RDE (2) 92 - Marcus Davenport, 99 - Mario Edwards, Jr. (FA 2019) NT (2) 90 - Malcolm Brown (FA 2019), 76 - Taylor Stallworth DT3 (2) 98 - Sheldon Rankins (IR), 93 - David Onyemata, 99 - Tomasi Laulile (RFC 2019) LDE (2) 94 - Cameron Jordan, 91 - Trey Hendrickson Now, the injury to Rankins and possible looming discipline for Onyemata jumps out immediately and is why Edwards was signed as he can play at that DT3 spot... As things are, we have a three-man rotation at DE (Jordan, Davenport, Hendrickson) and a three-man rotation at DT/NT (Brown, Stallworth, Edwards) to start the season... Anything Laulile, formerly a DE, can offer is lagñiappe in addition to the 3-man rotation among the DTs, but he's likely a camp body, practice squad development project... Point I'd make is there's no guarantee Rankins makes it back for this season; and, Big O likely misses four (4) games; so we have need for a true pass rushing DT3 to reduce wear, tear... While Edwards can rotate as a DT3, you still need a big DE end that can set that edge; my criticism of record of the Davenport trade set aside, Davenport has yet to play a full season as the starting DE... For my money, I'd leave Edwards right where he is, taking pressure off of Davenport and making the DE position one of strength, elite depth as it was last season... Let's focus on getting a DT3 who can come in with Big "O" and offer some pop now, rotate with Edwards the first four games (hopefully) and give us options downstream... And if Rankins, who's been on IR/PUP every season of his career, doesn't fully recover, the team having a young DT3 has options with impending contract extensions on the horizon... |
It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

Re: Saints Re-Sign CB PJ Williams
I’m not really sure why Onyemata would be suspended. He wasn’t arrested and he didn’t fail a drug test.

He got better as the season went along. He’s decent in the slot. I think he found his spot.

That offer was cash, one year, he's off the market, and Payton/Loomis just bought themselves of notable cap expense, another year to acquire either draft capital to replace him or next season's free agency... At the end of the day, not many guys want to be a 4th CB on a team; he definitely improved as he got more snaps, opportunities and he already knows the system, locker room... |

Solid move. He knows the system and have chemistry with the other players. Should be able to keep improving.

I feel good with him as a solid backup and five million is worth the peace of mind to me and apparently Loomis feels the same way. |
