Some people remain convinced that Red McCombs will use some of the $600 million he received from the sale of the Vikings to become a major investor in the New Orleans Saints and try to move them to San Antonio, where he resides.

The Falcons, Lions, Cowboys and 49ers are among the teams expected to show some interest in safety Lance Schulters, who was released by the Titans. "This is a case where we are continuing to deal with the salary cap issues that were primarily addressed in February, and we were unable to find a deal that was agreeable for both sides," Titans GM Floyd Reese said. "We wish him the best and realize he still has some quality football ahead of him, but we are committed to getting through our cap difficulties this year."

New Vikings owner Zygi Wilf asked for a car so he could become acquainted with the area. He will he'll drive himself into the neighborhoods, where he'll stop by convenience stores and other grass-roots venues to get a personal feel for the communities. That seems to be his style. "I want to know the people here," he said. Hall of Fame former Vikings coach Bud Grant will remain a consultant with the team and retain an office at Winter Park. Wilf, who still prefers an open-air stadium, and Grant met Thursday, and Grant expressed the advantages he believed he had coaching outdoors with the elements.
