Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal

If the Saints wait until 4 p.m. Monday or later to officially sign Winston, he won't count against this year's compensatory draft choice formula.

The Saints will have to get creative, as usual, to make room for Winston financially, since they have only about $4 million in salary-cap space and still need to make room for their draft picks and a possible long-term extension with running back Alvin Kamara, among others. But Winston's deal would likely include voidable years that spread out any cap hit. And as a bonus incentive for signing Winston, if he were to leave in free agency next year and wind up starting for another team, the Saints could possibly earn a high-end compensatory draft pick.

Wonder what Winston’s contract is going to be. We will have more money tied up to QBs than any other team. I won’t be disappointed in the Winston contract as long as it’s cheap, but if it turns out to be 10+mil, why not spend that money on a big time impact player? There were plenty of DTs or DEs that could have been signed for less than 10mil per year.

I don't know how we could give Jameis 10 million when we just guaranteed Tayson Hill 16 million over a few years. I'm curious if the Jameis signing will actually happen.

If we're going to drop 10 million, bring in a veteran Wide Receiver so we are guaranteed loaded with weapons and have depth with receivers.

He does have skills. He just needs a brain.

I want to be clear, as I have been critical of Winston in this thread. I think he has the ability to be a great QB but he lacks the mental liquidity to make the correct throws and anticipate defensive schemes. Now perhaps that eye surgery he had will make him see the field better. Perhaps he turns it around and becomes an amazing QB.

My issue is not with Winston, it is with a large contract being paid to a position that will likely have no impact. Putting teddy in when Drew was hurt was a low risk move, but if we have to put Winston in... why not just roll with Hill who is less risky and supposedly the next Steve Young.

It makes as much sense as overpaying for a LG and having a RG who went to the pro bowl, then you draft a G in the first round for a Super Bowl ready team.

These moves don’t smell like a win now mentality, but perhaps that’s the right approach...

His Wonderlic score was 1 point shy of Peyton Manning and that’s who his football IQ was often compared to. He has a brilliant football mind. The Buccaneers have been a horribly run franchise that hasn’t made the playoffs since my senior year of high school. Jameis Winston went into a bad situation. Now he’s in a good one.

We did lock up a receiver. His name is Taysom Hill. If you think he was extended to be a QB I have some beach front property to sell you in Ouachita Parish.

Because Hill isn't the QB of the future, nor the backup. THAT is clear.

This absolutely reeks of a win now mentality to me. Get a cheap Winston on a one year deal so you can use Hill to his fullest capacity as a WR/everything else.
