Per Rotoworld it's being finalized. Ugh....

Good ol' crab-legs

I wonder if he'll take over the team speech duties from Brees?

...actually, I forgot he had that eye surgery, so maybe he's not Mr. Magoo anymore :)

Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal

Good. Lots of upside with this dude. I know a lot of people here make fun of him (me too, pre game speeches etc.) but his talent can't be ignored. When Drew retires we may have franchise QB tied to his prime years at reasonable price. I like Taysom Hill but he isn't long term answer at QB position.

Quick - name another backup QB who threw for 5,000yds and 30 TDs.

I’ll wait.

Why did they draft the Stevens guy? Try to sneak him on the PS?

Honestly, with just a one year deal,i dont hate it. The man has talent, hopefully the Payton and our high quality locker room will keep him in check.

Hopefully just a 1 year insurance policy that we never have to use. He's an embarrassment.

Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal

I don't hate it either. He's way more accomplished and experienced than any other guy we could bring in to be the #2. If something happened and Drew missed some games again, I'd feel much better about Winston's ability to come in and help us win a few than I would about Taysom. I love me some Taysom, but he'll never be a starting QB in the NFL.

Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal

He's only insurance if Drew and Hill get hurt.

I hear you. It feels...I don't know, kinda gross. His issues seem to be maturity vs talent. Sometimes a change of scenery does wonders.

I know this. If we face another stretch without Brees, he's about the best backup available.

Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal

I think this is a good insurance policy in case Brees gets injured but also gives the team a good look at him to see if those turnover issues can be corrected. If so, the sky is the limit for Winston with a coach like Payton. He threw for over 5,000 yards last season! He will also push Taysom during camp and the best man with end up being the no. 2 QB. I personally think that Taysom is gone after this season which is why the Saints traded back into the draft to select Stevens who is similar to Hill.

Worst case he is our no.3 and then he leaves for another team next season and we get our 3rd round pick back!

Now we actually have a reason to bring Ted Ginn back. Winston can actually utilize his strengths.

That's what I am hoping for here. The fact that the Bucs game up on him and there wasn't exactly a rush to sign him acts as a wake up call.

Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal

People actually trying to claim he jut here incase both get hurt. If that was the case they'd have signed McCown or Glennon.

He's a 26 year old first round pick that's just thrown big yardage. Yeah he has many issues but they're having a look if that's him or the system. He has far more pedigree as a QB than Hill has and he's 4 years younger.

Actually D-Jax played much better with Fitzpatrick at QB, never got on the same page with Winston. And he is all time great when it comes to tracking the football and making those long throws automatic TDs. Also I don't like Ginns route running and effort which was evident this past season. I think Harris will take that next step into becoming our Tyreek Hill type of player. Winston can be lethal on those 20-30 yds throws and seams for TEs. He made Cameron Brate look like prime Jimmy Graham on those red zone TDs.

Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal

I think it’s just a stepping stone for him to learn and focus on his fundamentals so he can find a starting job in 2021.

Cruize 04-26-2020 08:54 AM

Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal

Not a fan in any way, shape or form. Winston does not have what it takes mentally to be a consistent or winning QB in the NFL. I would not want his personality in the locker room. I believe it will take away much needed and well deserved reps Hill needs in his progression as a QB. If you believe Hill is your future QB, he should get the physical and mental reps as sole and clear backup this season. I get Winston is young, experienced, cheap and has physical skills. I get having competition at every position which isn't easy under the cap. I understand Payton being intrigued and believing he can get the best out of him. I just don't like him or believe it was necessary.

If he proves himself then why not be a starter here?

OF COURSE!!
NFL GM'S ARE TOTALLY CLUELESS WHEN IT COMES TO WHICH PLAYERS HAVE BEEN RELEASED BY WHAT TEAM!

IF ONLY THE NFL HAD A SYSTEM, I KNOW THEY COULD CALL IT THE "WAIVER WIRE""

REMEMBER WHEN MIKE McCARTHY ATTEMPTED TO "SNEAK" TAYSOM HILL ONTO THE GREEN BAY PS?

HIS BIG MISTAKE WAS NOT PUTTING THE BLACK FRAME GLASSES WITH BIG NOSE AND FAKE MUSTACHE ON HIM. WORKS EVERY TIME!!!

LITTLE KNOWN SECRET IS THAT DREW BREES WAS WEARING THOSE WHEN THE DOLPHINS BROUGHT HIM IN!!

ONLY NICK SABAN RECOGNIZED HIM BUT NO ONE ELSE DID! HEARD THAT ON SERIOUS FM'S HUMPING THE HASH MARKS!!!

PAYTON AND DARREN SHARPER TOOK HIM OUT "ON THE TOWN" AND GOT HIM SMASHED. SUPER GLUED THE GLASSES ON HIM AND WELL THE REST IS AS THEY SAY "HISTORY"

THAT "BIRTHMARK" ON HIS FACE IS FROM SCRAPING THE SUPER GLUE OFF!!

IF BOSTON SCOTT HAD LEFT HIS "DISGUISE" ON HE'D STILL BE A SAINT!!!

OZIGBO FLAT OUT REFUSED TO WEAR HIS, THAT'S HOW HE BECAME A JAGUAR!! HIS CAREER STATS BY THE WAY 9 RUSHES FOR A WHOPPING 27 YARDS!! (CHAMPIONSHIP)

I'm not sure people understand but next season is like job audition for Winston with the Saints.

Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal

Jameis is also coming directly from our biggest threat in the NFC South.

He has the highest familiarity with Bruce Arians system and the core of that team is back on both sides of the ball.

Information aka intel.

Bottom line is that our coach is still a mastermind offensive coordinator who has mentored untold QB's (Romo/Brees) into a winning franchise. He thought enough of Jameis to bring him in and add to a stacked roster.

He could have possibly made more money elsewhere but "chose" New Orleans. The kid put an emphasis on his future. I think he's maturing and have good people in his camp.

I know many believe this is just an "insurance policy" signing to Brees … I'm just not so sure about that.

Saints have brought in a talented QB, former 1st rd pedigree that could develop into the successor to the GOAT.

To be continued ...

Only THE YOUNGER GOAT can beat THE OLDER GOAT!
Personally think Brady came down to the NFC South because he was able to play Brees at least 2 more times head to head. Both are competitors and now that Brady is in our division, we'll be stronger.

I was expecting a veteran QB signing all along so this doesn't surprise me one bit. Winston should come in as cheaply as any other and he definitely has upside. The "intel" mentioned above may be a small factor, but what I enjoy is how the Bucs fans are taking this. They are pissed. LOL!

Is he though?

I mean if your aim for a QB is to throw points to the other team it’s a great signing. At least with Teddy we had a ball control guy that was competent in making good calls....

I don’t get it, between this and signing peat to a huge contract it seems like they are missing the boat. Hope this isn’t the level of competence we will see after Drew.

I think every position on this years team is up for grabs, as it always should be. These are the last few years to push with a HOF QB and stud talent with Kamara, MT, and a stud defensive line into another SuperBowl.

How much does Peat actually pop against the cap? I thought Wofford was the bigger hit on cap.

Don't forget that Winston did have corrective surgery on his eye to resolve an issue that he had with bad nearsightedness. It can only help his game.

Once again, I trust those that have FAR more experience than us.
