I'm in the minority in this because I was born and raised on the banks of the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge and I'm not an LSU fan. It is in my opinion that if a player didn't go to LSU and was a thorn in their sides when he played against them, fans in Louisiana don't like them. Personally I like it when all players that have Louisiana ties excel in the NFL. It's just weird who people from Louisiana will cheer for. I remember being at a Saints game against the Steelers in the 70's and majority of the crowd was pulling for Bradshaw because he was from La. I still believe the main reason for that is because he went to La Tech and was never a threat to LSU. And there was also 2007 when some people I know was pulling for the Colts because of Addai who is from Texas but went to LSU. I just think a lot of LSU fans base their loyalties and who they like solely on if they went to LSU or caused them heartbreak. But everyone is entitled to their opinion and who they want to cheer for. And if anyone doesn't like Eli for not wanting to go to San Diego, remember John Elway did the same thing.

I loved Archie. He was one of the reasons I am a Saints fan. He was the best player on the team by a long shot and could've been a superstar on other teams, but he never complained, or at least never too loudly. Roger Staubach once said Archie was the best quarterback of his day. And the way he would get beat up and down every Sunday and yet came back week after week made me proud.
I'm very happy with the way things turned out, getting Drew and winning a Super Bowl, but back then, in the Billy Joe, Aaron Brooks days, I would've loved if either of his boys played for the Saints.

No, I'm not really old enough. I'm only 36 and he was drafted 81? 82, maybe? I was a Steeler "fan", but I was only about 5 or 6 years old, so I am still really not aware of what Elway did. I'm not really a fan of his, though. I respect each of these quarterbacks for what they brought to the field, but not a fan of any of them.

I like both Peyton and Eli. I have no reason not to. They play the game the right way and they're elite players which is a treat to watch on the football field. Whether or not they've from LA or MS, LSU or Ole Miss, really has no bearing on the way I feel.

Archie on the other hand, I don't really care for... but that's just because I never got to see him play. I really don't have a true sense of what he meant to this organization... or even to the game of football. The same goes with the rest of the old school football players. I try to have opinions on players that I can relate to... the players I've seen growing up.

Thanks for the comments, and again, this is the kind of thing I am curious about.

Archie was persona non grata to Louisianians prior to becoming a Saint because of the fierce rivalry that existed between Ole Miss and LSU at that time. The rivalry has subsided considerably due to Ole Miss not being able to keep-up...but that's another story.

I am going strictly on memory here, so I may be mistaken with some of the facts, but it seems to me that LSU was always in the hunt for the national title, and I'm pretty sure that Archie and the Rebs upset them during his sophomore and junior seasons...with the latter inspiring a headline for the TP stating, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Superman...and he wears #18 or the Ole Miss Rebels!"

Archie broke his arm his senior year and I believe it was on the turf of the Astrodome against Houston. He was out for most of the rest of the season, but did come back against LSU with a cast from shoulder to wrist on his left arm. He led the Rebs to a TD early in the game, but eventually they were crushed by the Tigers that night.

So...that's a little of the history that led to LSU fans and Louisianians to not care for the redhead. I am not sure whether they ever got completely on board with Archie and his crew.

Good thread. I had a love/hate relationship w Archie. I remember yelling at the screen everytime he fumbled, threw an int, failed to convert 3rd down (that was a lot of yelling btw but I digress).

My point is that it wasnt until after Archie's career was over that I really appreciated what he went through while he was here. A million different coaches, surrounded by minimal talent (except during his pro bowl year), and then thrown away by Bum to the Oilers. All that while never complaining. Can you imagine how Cam or P Rivers wouldve acted in that situation? And now I think of how Brees handles himself under his current situation - ALL CLASS - which is the way he wouldve probably handled iti he were playing back in Archie's situation. That's why I live those 2 guys.

As far as Peyton or Eli, I never felt any loyalty to them and didn't care where they played. I have no negative feelings towards them - just indifferent. Not sure why it didn't matter except that I really don't start caring or rooting for a player until they actually become a Saint.
