I would imagine the numbers come into play when a player has responsibility for a specific opponent such as a CB that has a man assignment on a specific WR. Beyond that I really don't see much impact. I suppose the Mike could be "5" or the CB could follow #92 just as well.

The refs have hard enough time getting calls right with positional numbers. It will be interesting to see them add this detail and still get it right.
