Yeah, the GM has nothing to do with the success of a football team. That makes a lot of sense. 🙄

I am a Loomis fan, but I do understand how several of his recent moves and some of his long term contracts would make a person wonder if it is time for him to move on.

Possibly so. But the idea to fire him for signing Dalton is absurd IMO. One season after going 9-8 with the BS they endured last year? If they would have had Dalton instead of Simien/Hill/Book last year there is no doubt in my mind they win one more game and make the playoffs. They saw a weakness on the team (backup QB) and addressed it. You need to spend resources to better your team. For doing this his firing is called for? That’s the kind of Mickey Mouse attitude from fans that gives an organization a bad rep and makes desirable free agents less likely to come play for your team. How’s about the guy go through at least a couple of losing seasons (or even one) before the torches and pitchforks come out?

Not directing this at you Matt!

Signing Dalton does not necessarily cost the Saints a 3 round pick. The potential is there, of course. But it also depends upon the performance of the free agents lost and acquired. There are snap counts and post-season honors that come into play. If Armstead doesn't play the full season and fails to be named all-pro or all-conference it could reduce his potential value in the calculation. If Dalton plays significant time it could also change the projection. The same can be said for Marcus Williams and Marcus Maye.

Could the Saints have waited to sign Dalton? Who knows? Why take a chance on losing him to another team just for an off chance things work out for a possible extra mid-round pick the following year?

With Jameis coming off of major surgery, and the problems we've had the last 3 years with QB injuries, made a lot of sense to grab a top insurance policy. Let the chips fall where they may with the comp pick - I was reading recently the comp formula is a secret azz thing done by the NFL office, so out of control, really.

Here's an article covering what is now known of the compensatory pick formula. The latest CBA included releasing the actual basics to the teams, players, and public.

The Basics and Methodology of Projecting the NFL’s Compensatory Draft Picks

And you can be sure we weren't the only franchise in the market for a good dependable back-up QB.

I know it was confusing but I didnt mean to say to fire him for this move alone. I said after all these bad moves. This and the draft trade were the last straws. Previous issues like the hill and peat contracts and past ill advised draft trades.

This move almost certainly costs us a third round pick. The formula is complicated but the experts have analyzed this. The main way that can change is if another team ignores the comp pick system and signs one of our remaining free agents. I am doubting that happens, and not even sure who that would be.

Fair question - Was the market for Dalton red-hot, or could we have waited?

Good question. But even if the market was not hot, By adding him now he gets extra time to to learn about the coaches, the offense and his teammates and vice versa.

None of us know. You should probably ask Daltons agent.
