Michael Thomas agrees to restructured contract

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; 99.9% of his tweets are injury/‘recovery’ updates. I don’t have any big issue with his personality, it is fine. He should be a talk show host, because its hard to reaggrivate some tear of your personality....

Re: Michael Thomas agrees to restructured contract

The three things that bother me in order about Thomas are:
1) He reportedly didn’t return calls to the team and ghosted them about his injury status during the offseason. Payton and company were apparently surprised by his condition when they shouldn’t have been. Thomas kept them in the dark to the detriment of the team.

2) He insulted Brees when Brees made a very personal statement about how he felt about his grandparents serving in the military. Very low class IMO.

3) He can’t stay on the field anymore.

So, does that mean you've developed a sense of personal dislike that you cannot overcome? I think that's what saintsfan1976 may have been referring to in his last post.

1) There's no evidence of any of this. Just blown out of proportion speculation. As our friend Rugs has pointed out on many occasions, he doesn't blame Thomas one bit for trying to rehab the first injury instead of jumping into surgery based upon the track record of the Saints medical corps. Let's not forget that once he did agree to the surgery the doctors botched it and a second surgery was required. Is this a sound reason to dislike Thomas?

2) Thomas and Brees were both man enough to put this misunderstanding between them behind them and maintain their since re-emphasized admiration for one another. One would hope that those not directly involved could do the same. This was a hot, sensitive topic that got many on edge from both sides of the issue. I believe we all need to move on and respect each other.

3) Injuries are and always will be part of the game. I'll guarantee you that the player wants to be out there worse than you want him to be out there. Let's also not forget that we had dozens of other players miss significant time due to injuries over the same period. How can this truly be a reason to dislike the man?

1) It was more than speculation. It was widely reported and neither he or the organization denied it. At the time Payton specifically said he was surprised and said it set the team back. Dick move to not keep your employer abreast of your status.

2) It was a jerk thing to do or say about a person expressing feelings about their family. I happen to be sitting with my sick 90 year old dad who served in Korea and Inagree 100% with what he said. Thomas publicly saying he doesn’t know better was an insult to many that have military families. Brees can do what he likes. Kinda like Rugby feels about talking bad about someone’s mother, it’s a dick move on Thomas’ part.

3) Sorry if I prefer players that are actually able to be on the field rather than players who aren’t. One Trequan Smith is better than 10 Michael Thomases if all MT is doing is eating up salary. You also don’t see him on the sidelines often cheering the team on and helping other players by looking at real-time tape.

If you’ve read and understood my posts on the subject at all you wouldn’t have to ask if I’m pulling against him. But pulling for him is a lot different than kissing his ass and denying he has done things that validly rubbed people the wrong way.

Has he ever done anything to you personally to warrant this apparent serious dislike, Boston? I'm sorry, but I believe most of us have had others they know personally do or say far worse things and have been able to move on and let it go. In all seriousness, why hold onto this bitterness, especially when it is in no way personal? It really can't be healthy.

1) I remember the initial reports and the feeling I got. I was pi$$ed. And I found it easy to believe. But as time goes on I ask myself - would a guy who treated his coaches and teammates that way be welcomed back the way MT has been? I doubt it. Which leads me to "feel" like the story was overblown... Again, with the benefit of hindsight.

2) I didn't like ANY of the backlash Brees received. Not just from MT. This is a great example of a conversation to be had NOT on social media but face to face, like men. But that's not many people do today apparently

3) At this point I can only look at the totality of tenure in New Orleans. Came into the league and became a DOMINANT force for several years. A freak injury, compounded by several factors (debatably his fault but also the team has a poor history..) followed by continued communication with Allen and from what we can see, a ton of hard work that all culminates to September 2023. I'm left with one feeling and that is of hope.

We are a better team with Thomas ON the field and MAKING PLAYS than without.

So what exactly did Thomas say that was so bad?

First in an interview:

Highlight: @readdanwrite asks @drewbrees what the star NFL quarterback thinks about "players kneeling again when the NFL season starts."

@drewbrees: “I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country.”

Not long after that clip started making the rounds on Twitter, Saints receiver Michael Thomas fired off two tweets that seemed to be aimed at his quarterback.

This was much later explained as initially protecting his QB saying he didn't understand the meaning of the protest.

And then directed at no one in particular:

We don’t care if you don’t agree and whoever else how about that.

— Michael Thomas (@Cantguardmike) June 3, 2020

That's it. Nothing more.

Soon after Thomas and Brees spoke privately and resolved the confusion and misunderstanding. They resolved it like most adults. Afterword Brees said he then understood the protests had nothing to do with the flag or it's significance, but was just using the moment to bring to light inequalities related to law enforcement.

Re: Michael Thomas agrees to restructured contract

I really think it should be noted that Drew Brees is the absolute professional. I really feel like he just stayed professional throughout the entire ordeal with Jenkins and MT because he knew that he wasn’t bigger than the team and getting into a pissing match with them would’ve further divided the team.

I honestly don’t think he actually came to terms with all this. I think he forced himself to conform for fear of being destroyed by his teammates and media. (I wish he would’ve held his ground. I would’ve respected that much more.)

Imo, he just layed down. Just like everyone else does for fear of reprisals and being canceled.

I love Drew but that was pretty cowardly. And he just never seemed the same after that.
