Re: Saints Offer Restructured Contract to Winston as Backup
He's made plenty of $ already. It's just a matter of if he thinks other teams will come calling for a potential starter gig. If so, he's gone. If not, holding a clip board is not such a bad gig. As I stated before, I'll volunteer for that gig for a lot less $. I am awaiting a call from Kai.

I would be real surprised if there is much interest in Winston. If you are facing a backup role at best, might as well stay where you are. I still hope we draft someone, Winston for sure isnt an answer. I pray for Carr to remain healthy.

Re: Saints Offer Restructured Contract to Winston as Backup
It's pretty simple.
He's an extremely capable backup, familiar with the system. Very unfortunate run of injuries. Keep in mind we didn't risk your health. Either we work it out or you're free to search for another opportunity. But the next offer won't be this good... |

The Saints organization and fan base has treated Jameis Winston pretty poorly. I would like him to stay though.

Re: Saints Offer Restructured Contract to Winston as Backup
I think JW had a very tuff act to follow rez on a couple of points. First to come here after Tampa Bay it was such a bitter rivalry it was not easy for Saints Fans to just jump in feet first.
Always understood why Coach Payton brought him in, Brees was obviously on his final run and Jamis was a talented, young veteran QB. Secondly and most importantly JW would have always found it difficult in comparisons when replacing Brees behind center and Brees’s relationship with New Orleans and the fans straight out of the box. I think he handled himself well was a humble solid teammate but never displayed the skill sets to fit into and command the Saints offense requires to succeed IMHO.. Add in the 2 seasons of spotty play with lots of critical and persistent injuries along with his season ending injuries it was just unfortunate and regrettable. It was not due to any failure of character, effort or professionalism on his part all were above reproach. Dennis made the call, we will never know the complete story, but I don’t think final decision was made without collective input from the staff as a whole trying to put the team in the best position to win. Would like to see him stay in the backup position but I feel certain JW will seek out any opportunity to compete for a starting position first and foremost. If he stays for the back up and it helps the cap situation, great. But he JW leave the Saints would like say all the best to him and good luck in your NFL journey. |

Still, he did have an opportunity to shine and come through. If he'd shown enough in the time he did have, this discussion wouldn't be here. He's matured. And with the money being thrown around on QBs, there is daylight for him to get more $. We'll see shortly just what kind of "strong AZZ offer" he was given, that was also cap friendly . How many current teams would consider him to lead the reins? We may be fixing to find out. As backups go, teams will likely go with younger players due to cap considerations. So if backup QB is his future going forward, Saints may be his best option. And who knows, if the unthinkable were to happen, he gets another opportunity to shine. | |
