Saints Offer Restructured Contract to Winston as Backup
That solves our backup questions. Jameis would be a fool not to take the deal.

Re: Saints Offer Restructured Contract to Winston as Backup
Winston apparently wasn't good enough to replace his own backup after his injury according to Dennis Allen. TBH, I'm more than a little surprised that we made the offer. If I were Winston I would have to think long and hard before taking the deal after the way DA said he wouldn't lose his starting job because of injury but then he did just that. Nonetheless, Winston rode the pine the rest of the year because DA said Dalton gave them a better chance to win.

And if he agrees, his salary will be $1 million this year and **** tons guaranteed next year with voidable years in 2025 and 2026 because thats how we roll. Can't afford to make cuts so we try to keep everyone who is on a multi-year non-rookie deal forever unless they play well enough to merit a big raise we can't afford. Andrus Peat may die on our active roster and we may have to develop a Medicare supplement plan for active players.
Winston would be a fine backup but he would benefit much more from going somewhere like KC, LA, Buff, SF, or Den with a QB guru coach where he could become a legend if the starter goes down and he puts it all together in the right system. |

Jameis is a great dude, but I'd much rather see us draft or obtain a young QB that Carr and Taysom can mentor and save money at backup QB. Maybe this new deal won't pay Jameis much, but it's still money we need to use elsewhere on the depth chart.

Can’t see him sticking around unless he and his agent feel there is little interest in JW. His only bargaining chip with the Saint is the current contracts owed Dead Money remaining after a post June 1 cut spread over 2023 and 2024.
Just not sure there is market for a starting position for JW at this. |

Re: Saints Offer Restructured Contract to Winston as Backup
My best guess is Andy Dalton has no interest in returning to the Saints. We all know Winston can sling the ball and can pick a defense apart if he has a ton of time to throw the ball. I could absolutely be wrong, but I don't feel Winston provides much of anything if able to get a pass rush on him.

I'm just hoping that all we are getting is a clipboard holder and practice partner for the next eight years or so. Derek Carr has only missed two regular season games to injury. He missed the final game in 2016 to a fractured leg and coincidentally one game in October 2017 with the exact same fracture to a transverse process that Winston experienced. He played the rest of the season with the fracture. The difference is he only broke one of them and Winston had four separate fractures. |
