What I am saying is that they don't just grow on trees.

Here's what we have now. We usually keep nine on the 53 man roster and a couple on the practice squad.

LT70Penning, Trevor 22/167Young, Landon 21/666Kidd, Lewis CF22
LG75Peat, Andrus 15/174HURST, JAMES CC/Bal62Kraemer, Tommy U/Det
C78McCoy, Erik 19/273GARCIA, MAX U/Arz65Pihlstrom, Alex CF23
RG51Ruiz, Cesar 20/164Saldiveri, Nick 23/476Throckmorton, Calvin CF2061Filiaga, Chuck W/GB
RT71Ramczyk, Ryan 17/172Norton, Storm U/LAC68Evans II, Mark CF23

Then we traded for or drafted the wrong players.
Davenport
Tommy Stevens
Adam Trautman
Zach Baun
Ian Book

Baun actually looked good this past weekend. He made some splash plays.

That said, why would we think any offensive lineman drafted instead of any of those players would eventually turn out any better than what we currently have to work with this camp? Once again, it all comes down to health. There isn't a team in the league with enough quality depth to not struggle with losing two or three starting offensive linemen. Not even the mighty "Feagles".

It seems there are only so many humans alive that have the ability and desire to be a great offensive lineman. I would love it if we had a full compliment of nine of them to start the season. But, like you, I have no idea how to go about that.

Out of that list, Davenport is the one hurts the most since he cost two number ones in essence.

Doesn't hurt anymore. Water under the bridge. Woulda', coulda', shoulda' has no impact on anything moving forward.

It's the very same argument. Historically, no player other than a very few handful are worth two number ones in a move up situation in the draft. Yes, Mahomes is one of those rare exceptions. Ingram's career was good, but still not worth two ones, arguably. I expect us to witness this very same argument play out with the former QB from Bama.

Then again, you have numerous number ones that have been selected that were busts on a single pick. It all comes back around to doing what you think as management is the best move at the time. Nobody knows how it's going to turn out in the long run and by then it no longer matters.

I thought that the Davenport was a good trade and believed he would earn his draft status. But we didn't see his injuries mounting up and shutting down a promising career. A promising QB may be worth two first round picks but rarely has it worked out for us. MI was good but not great. Which, is what I want from two first round draft picks.

Keith Kirkwood on the final 53 huh?

If Shaq Davis ends up getting cut, no way you'll be able to stash him away on the practice squad.

I like Ugo Amadi (CB). He's looked good too.

Agreed... Kirkwood will be easier to stash on the PS. You know SP is scouring what other Saints he can pick off.

This is true. When you are in the nickel or dime 90% of the time there's no need to carry five LB's on the 53.

Offensive linemen do not grow on trees. They are arguably the hardest positions to fill. Who knows, it may take five years to find another guard as good as Ruiz is now. And then you'd also be dealing with trying to fit a new piece into the OL unit which in itself is never easy. I don't think there's any chance Ruiz gets a chance to walk. But, I guess I could be wrong. There's always a first time. ;)

I tend to agree that Trevor P should play as many snaps vs Texans as possible. He definitely need the reps.

Lastly, he was spot on with Blake G. He hasn’t been all that consistent & if this team wants to make that post season “push”, special teams has to be perfect.

He’s got time though.

The opener is right around the corner :bng:

Let him pancake players all game long. Oh, and don't run anything but pass plays so he gets plenty of practice at pass blocking, which is where he needs a lot of work.

Probably because none of the others could do what he does best as well as him.

We don't see what the coaches see on a daily basis. How are the others in the classroom? Do they know their assignments? Are they willing and able to play the support role? Are they willing or able to perform those rubs and/or block downfield? Are they able to make that catch as a 3rd or 4th option when the need does arise? Let's not forget that Tre'Quan quietly had a better catch percentage than Olave last season.

Tre'Quan isn't a #1 or #2 type of guy. He never was. Not many are. He was thrown into that role, however, because of injuries and didn't put up the fan expected numbers. From all indications he does, however, fill the role required with the current staff very well ... when healthy. I expect that he'll be placed on IR and return at some point sooner than later.

After watching AT Perry and Shaq block last week left me with the feeling that 3Q would in fact be back....and he is. He is probably going to IR but his blocking gives us better YAC. The thing is, it's hard to block when you're in the hot tub.

Surprised-thought RB Merrifield would make it over Merritt for 3rd RB. Hopefully, makes Practice Squad if he hasn't already.

Personally speaking as an amateur, wouldn't have risked Jaylon Smith nor DT Lalos to waivers. Front office knew how to gamble up and down the PS which was nice to see.

Nice to have top quality back ups at DT, LB, Safety and Corner. Even WR depth looking decent. Weird we don't have that with all the Guards after all the anguish in recent years.

Anguish resulting in 1st and 2nd round picks for interior OL, reassigning early 1st rounder Peat (a mistake I called a panic move at the time). Nice to finally see 4th rounder toward it this year.

Fix Guard already. Pay someone already. We need a Senio Kelemete swing guy again.

We need the 3Quan that balled after his shouting match with Jameis on the sideline. That 3Quan was a keeper. One could argue he was without a doubt our best WR to close out that season. He made some unbelievable grabs.
I could stand up for that guy. But after the season ended he reverted back to this guy. Falling to the ground, getting injured and missing most of the season.

Jaylon Smith wasn't waived. He was released as a veteran player. He couldn't be claimed. He was free to choose where he wanted to go.

And, yes, Merriweather has been placed on the practice squad.
