We look weak depth wise behind Lattimore and Mario Davis.

I expect the rookie WRs to edge out some the dead weight at WR.

Hopefully Pete stays healthy & yeah you're right, after Demario it gets shaky at LB spot.

Jackson is essentially a second-year rookie.

I'd take a flyer on DT Matt Ionnadis.

Experienced & still pushes the pile. Breese will require some time to develop into that dawg most believe he will become.

They keep saying that, about Bresee needing time. Is that to keep our expectations in line? Even with the notion that DTs may need some time to develop and gel with the team, my expectation, our expectation should be to see him inserted immediately and produce immediate results. He's no longer injured. Suh was a force to be reckoned with in year one. And Bresee was being compared to Suh.

Don't disagree for depth purposes, however.

I tend to agree with you, Smash. We have a rotation at DT for the most part anyway and from what I have been hearing is that Bresee should be involved from day one. Ourlads has him slotted at starter and they have always been about as accurate as it comes from my experience.

This guy may work out for depth...

+1. Unless you are a team stacked at all positions then you should expect to get a starter with your first round pick.

Re: The 2023 JeanPierre Saints Roster Depth Chart Thread

Who is this "they" that says Bresee needs time?

https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft/positions/_/position/dt

Pre-Draft Analysis

Bresee is a dominant run defender with the strength to stack and shed blockers. He has the quick hands and feet to slip and split linemen. He locates the football quickly, chases down ball carriers and is an effective tackler. As a pass-rusher, he needs to improve his ability to string together multiple moves. He's powerful and flashes as a hand fighter. -- Steve Muench

Matt Miller's NFL comp: Zach Allen

Post-Draft Analysis

Bresee is a powerful interior defensive lineman with the size to control the line of scrimmage. With Khalen Saunders added in free agency, Bresee will be asked to start next to him, with Cameron Jordan flanking them. Bresee has tremendous upside if he can stay healthy and is a natural fit in a 4-3 front. -- Miller

Projected Year 1 impact: High-impact Day 1 starter. Bresee enters a team that desperately needs help along the interior, and he brings a young pass rush presence that's also stout against the run. -- Jordan Reid

Not sure if you are locked in to any of Mike Detillier's takes, however a few days back he was talking about how most players (D line specifically) will either take a couple of years to develop as a complete DT because they need to refine technique based on height.

His example used was Chris Jones (similar height/torso to Bryan). Year 1, 2 he was getting gashed vs the run until he polished up and developed.

I thought that was an astute observation.

Will BB START immediately? ... I hope so but personally I'm not expecting "immediate results". It takes time. The NFL is a different beast.

Detillier has been as astute as he's been off the mark on players if one is to assess his observations through the years. The video you posted with Greg Cosell seems to show a bit more insight than what Detillier offers.

IMHO, it's the last chance saloon for Bryan Edwards, Tre'Quan Smith, Keith Kirkwood, Keith Merritt. They may be on a short leach in the advent of injuries. The new kids AT Perry, Shaq Davis and Malik Flowers will make the team. Sy Barnett will need to make his mark on ST to make it. Locks are Olave, Thomas, Shaheed.

Two things that I'm hoping for. Tre'Quan finally gets cut. Bryan Edwards develops great timing with Carr and forces Smith off the roster.

There are some analysts (Cosell, Baldinger) who believe this may be Edward's last opportunity in the NFL.

Let's just wait and see.

Theoretically, it's a better roster than last year which had a lot of us pretty excited. We've got better depth now with proven experienced veterans and a solid rookie class. I'm still not sold on our LB depth though. There will be valuable cuts after training camp for our scouts to sift through to fill those back up roles.

I could understand your concern about LB depth if we were primarily in a 3-4, but given Allen runs a 4-2 over 80% of the time and we have eleven LB's in camp I'm confused about the depth concerns. I know they are really high on D'Marco Jackson and Anfernee Orji. I know they paid up to sign Orji as a UDFA. I believe Andrew Dowell showed promise last year, as well. We usually only keep six LB's on the roster, covering special teams and base defense.

I'm getting the feeling they feel they have the depth covered with who they added and who is returning already. I haven't really heard that much from their end about LB being a big concern.

They need to end the Zack Baun experiment. I know he isn’t on the field much, but it irks me seeing that name.

The Saints love to switch players to new positions. It didn't work for Baun and we should not have drafted him. That is not his fault though. Since we did draft him he's done nothing except special teams. We would have had better return from a trade to a 3-4 team that suits his skill set a couple of years ago.

Who would take his place right now... Jackson?

Saints rookie LB Nick Anderson is determined to prove himself right

He really doesn't have a place besides special teams. Pretty much the same way that Ellis didn't have a spot other than backing up Werner. As long as we stay with the 4-2 front as exclusively as we have (and I don't see that changing) we just need backups for Demario and Werner. We do need two or three of the six to make the roster pretty much dedicated to special teams.

Still, quite a few names out there in LB land that would be solid depth.

Jayon Brown, Myles Jack, or Corey Littleton.

Relying on an unproven rookie coming off an ACL injury & uncertainty of Werner playing 17 games is dangerous.

Demario is a dawg but father time (he's 34) has never lost.

Edit * Too bad things didn't work out with Kwon (who knows the system). He was a spark.

It's still super early, however, I'd bring in an experienced vet @ LB.

A lot of young guys but unproven.

At the very least, get a guy to fill the role left by > Kaden Ellis.

Don't dissagree ... however methinks they wait until cuts are being made around the league. It may be a while since the end of training camps are still a ways away. And who knows... maybe one of the rookies shows us something.

Those upcoming joint practices with the Chargers will definitely give us an idea of what we're working with.

[quote=K Major;974124]There are some analysts (Cosell, Baldinger) who believe this may be Edward's last opportunity in the NFL.

Personally, I was looking for a nice resurgence story line for him this season. Carr wasn't the only one stuck in Raiders purgatory.
