Re: Official 2024 Free Agency Discussion
If the organization has hitched its wagons to the Titanic, its wagons are now submarines.
As an organization we can roll over $50 million potential dead cap hits year to year on a league average QB, trade picks to prepare for a potential transition to a younger more affordable mobile QB with lots of risk but high ceiling, or pay $10m+ a year to an aging wildcat QB, but doing all at once is nonsense. If we traded for Fields he would have to be either an option to take over for Carr or an extra weapon wildcat formations, but that makes no sense when we borrowing heavily against Carr's contract to commit ourselves futher to Carr where exiting would force a major rebuild and we already have $10m committed at the wildcat QB spot with Hill.
The only way it would make sense to take on Fields even as a cheap short term backup would be if we moved on from Hill. This would both create a role for Fields to be utilized while Carr is still the starter, and clear up salary cap long term for if we ever did want to transition from Carr to Fields.
I don't think Fields is a high end starting QB in the NFL but if we didn't have Hill I would not oppose him as a backup if he came cheap and the cost was later refunded in comp picks or trade.
