The list was much longer when they realized there was a significant problem on their hands.

I heard something recently on NFL Radio on the topic of the shortage of quality offensive tackles in the game today. It been pointed out several times that the lack of real hands on coaching and teaching the position at the college level is, of course, a huge factor, but what they stressed was how it has became a recent trend for the truly athletic big guys to transition from offense to defense either early in college or even in high school. The "glory" of getting to the QB has become far more attractive than the "chore" of trying to protect the QB. I hadn't heard that before, but it makes perfect sense in today's game with the current player mentality.

We need a reliable right tackle who is not coming off 1,000 injuries even if they are not the best talent. But we need some talent, not Penning. And we need someone who will play, not David Back-On-IR-y

Derek Carr's $30mil 2025 salary would guarantee on 3/17/2025 if he is still on the roster, and if he were seriously injured he could not be cut, and at his salary he would likely not agree to an injury settlement. I hope Carr has a great season in 2024 but if Carr struggled and we were ready to move on, it would be a disaster if he suffered a serious injury, could not pass a physical, his $30m 2025 salary guaranteed in addition to the $10mil 2025 roster bonus that is already guaranteed. The situation that would put the Saints in going into 2025 would be a disaster, with $40 million 34 year old QB guaranteed full salary coming off a big injury. And if he is struggling we probably have to pay him $40 million to sit in late 2025, because a late season injury in 2025 could result in $50 million being guaranteed in 2026 (but this is much less likely because there is no guarantee trigger in 2026, so he would just need to pass a physical before the start of the season).

If our oline puts Carr at risk, it puts our franchise at risk. The Raiders sat Carr in 2022 and the Broncos sat Wilson in 2023 because of this same concern.

If we get a tackle with weaknesses, it is better to get a better pass blocker and sacrifice run blocking. Its unfortunate if our running game suffers, but would not cause nearly the harm of a Carr ACL injury.

The Falcons picking up two 30 something stars both coming off big injuries and wanting new contracts may help them win now. Maybe they will even win 10 games. But they wont win a ring and in the long run this will set them back. Let them go all in this year. It will be their ruin.
