RE: Apparently it is official - Payton

We'll have to give him a chance, not much else to do at this point, I think Benson made the right choice, this guy may surprise the hell out of us, wouldn't that be nice, my heart was set on Sherman but I am happy with Payton, one thing is for sure, he has a lot of work ahead of himself, " I pitty the fool".
I don't see him winning a ton of games in his first season but expect him to make the Saints a winning team in 2-3 years which is about how long it will take for a young QB entering the league to get comfortable, Payton is coming in at the right time, he knows QB's, as for the young QB ( did I say young) QB, how lucky he will be to have a young coach to help him develope the system, in fact the entire team will all learn Payton's new system along their new QB

Rest In Peace JoeSam, thanks for everything my friend.

One of two ways u can respond to this news. You can either get behind the team or @#$! and moan about not getting the guy you wanted. I personally don't see the good in wondering why he got a chance at a coaching job. Brad Childress got hired by the Vikings. Freakin Eric Mangini who's barely older than Joe Horn got hired by the Jets. Yet people are saying that Payton isn't that qualified. He's at least as qualified as those two guys. We definitely could have done worse, people.

I agree that we could have done worse, but that doesn't mean that I cannot question his qualifications. I also question the other names you mentioned. Payton may end up being a really good head coach, and I support him until I see a reason not to do so. I still wonder what he has done that led him to be hired as our new head coach.

Fair enough. I think people have to understand that everyone can't get a proven well known head coach. There's simply not enough slots. For every one of the 32 head coaches in the league, there are a litanny of assistants, a lot of who are better coaches than their bosses. I honestly want to know how many people knew who Charlie Weis was before this year. Probably not many at all. If he had been hired by the Saints last year i think people would've had the same doubts that people have about Payton. Heck I only knew of him because i'm an avid Madden football player. My point is, why don't we cut the NFL guys a little bit of slack?? This is their career, and I trust them to know who's qualified and who's not, at least better than I do. Those that they deem qualified aren't always limited to who we the fans can readily identify.

RE: Re: RE: Apparently it is official - Payton

Can anybody tell me what Mr. Payton has done to merit a head coaching position?
You all are correct. He's done nothing. But I think Benson may be looking for similar success to another team that went with a QB coach for the top job and they turned out to have a nice run so far.

Anyone remember that Andy Reid was a QB coach at Green Bay before getting the job in Philly? And if that's the template, then it stands to follow that we draft a QB in the first round. (Anyone remember McNabb being taken before Ricky?) Dare we dream?

Saw in the article posted on the front page where Payton is in the same mold as Gruden and Fox....God, I hope they're right. If not, we're in for another 6 years of Haslett-esque football.

Now, that something you don't hear everyday.

I have a hard time believing that Benson can make a right choice, especially when it comes to good football decisions. Now financial decisions, that's his specialty, which is why he hired Payton, because he was cheaper than a proven winner and would not interfer in Benson's football decisions.

All that we can hope is that he turns out to be better than what Benson bargained for.
