this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; For what it's worth, Dan Patrick just reported that the Saints have entered the Drew Brees sweepstakes with the Dolphins.... I know it's not breaking news, but it's the first time I've heard the Saints mentioned. He also said that ...

For what it's worth, Dan Patrick just reported that the Saints have entered the Drew Brees sweepstakes with the Dolphins....
I know it's not breaking news, but it's the first time I've heard the Saints mentioned. He also said that it could seriously change the draft. |

Would you take the chance then?" while you try making a decision, someone asks you: what if instead of Julia, you had a chance at a 3-some with Milla Jovovich and Jessica Alba, both after a beakup? My response would be: I would rather take a young man (Leinart) with lots of promise who I can mold into my system, and even would consider a vet who can throw now (Kitna), before I take a chance on someone who's injured now. Further, I would answer the hypotethical question with a resounding YES, because comparing both situations, Manning is the potential for the bigger payoff to the gamble of signing someone who's injured I would rather take a young woman (Jill) with lots of promise who I can mold into my "system", and even would consider a vet who can "throw" (Bea), before I take the chance on someone who just wants friends . Further, I would answer the hypotethical question with a resounding YES, because comparing both situations, Milla is European and will get over a breakup in no time, plus I have the chance at the 3-play with Alba!!!!! |

In my defense, Patrick did say it like "another team has entered the fray...we've reported the Dolphins interest in Brees, now the Saints have entered the picture" So....whatever. The first I had heard and I thought I would share. |

I was just wondering. The national outlets had us labeled as the frontrunners for Brees for over a week now.

And...i thought that the chatter around here was more of that "we should get every player available that is not currently a Saint" I am totally unsure about Brees....I like his game, but the injury/money scares me. But, nobaody wants to hear this....the draft is very deep in LBs and solid potential starters. Our pick could very well be worth 3 solid players. I also see the economics of the issue, which is that Matt will sell tix more than say, a solid LB/OL/CB combo. |

I could go either way on this one. I w as the first to propose Brees when San D said they would not give him an offer back in Feb. But I was also one of Leinart's biggest fans and pushers. There are pluses to taking Brees(less money spent on QB, proven starter, and it would really be Brees and Hawk or Fergie and not just Bress you are getting, plus extra picks beyond that) and the main negative(coming off an injury). Looking at it like that, the positives outweigh the negatives.
But there is a wild card, Matt Leinart is there for the taking. Franchise QB, a decision that would never be questioned, says the right things about coming here, winner, leader, high football IQ, on and on and on. But there are also negatives, HIGH HIGH contract, rookie, you would just be getting Leinart, no extra picks, no Fergie or Hawk. Those positives and negatives weight more evenly than the ones for Brees. But Brees' negative is so much a question mark, it just about equals any questions on Matt, cause if Brees can;t ever throw for this team(not saying his injury is that severe), we would have passed on a great player in Leinart. SO I can see where all the emotions come from regarding the decision. But honestly, I am fine with either one. I have always wanted this team to have a franchise QB in my lifetime(only saw film on Archie) and that could be Leinart. But since the debacle that has been Brooks, all I have wanted is a competent QB with good football smarts and leadership skills, that is Brees. So each person needs to weigh it our for themselves cause IMO, there is no bad decision here. You look at what you get WITH Brees if you take him. You look at what Leinart brings to the table. Either way, the Saints for one are in a fairly good spot regaring a QB and getting players, and for once we should all just be happy we aren't picking 16-20 again with not even a shot at a top player. |

Agree completely.
I could go either way with total faith that whatever we do will ultimately be the wrong decision. If we get brees, his arm will explode and Lienart will go to the HOF. If we get Matt, Brees will win a superbowl in Miami and Lienart will morph into Todd Marinovich. |

Good post whodi. I have been a huge Leinart supporter from day one. However, with our continuing inefficiency in FA, and the loss of Bentley, I just think the best thing for this team is to trade out, get Hawk, pick up Mangold in the 2nd round, and then use the rest of the picks on defense. I really think Leinart is the next big thing at QB in this league, but if Brees can stay healthy, and we can use the other picks on drafting playmakers at OC and on the defense, then I think it would be in the best interest of the team to trade down. It really pains me to say that because I really think Leinart is the shiznit, and I used to think that we'd get a guy like Witherspoon in FA, then we could focus on just QB and OL with the first two picks. But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Oh well.
