Doug Miller, NewOrleansSaints.com Sunday, August 26, 2007 - 12:19 PM Following their fourth preseason game of the 2007 summer campaign, the Saints have pared their roster down by four players. The Saints announced today that they have waived two rookies and also parted ways with two players that were designated as first-year players. Rookie free agents Desmond Sims (LB) and Joe Porter (CB) were released by the club, as were first-year players Jason Fife (QB) and Aaron Hosack (WR). The roster moves currently leaves the Saints’ roster at 78 players, meaning the Saints still need to make three transactions by Tuesday, August 28 by 3:00 p.m. CT to get to the NFL mandated roster size of 75 players. Fife split time in 2006 season between the Saints’ active roster and practice squad. He dressed but was inactive as the team’s third quarterback for four games in weeks three through six. Fife originally signed was by Saints on June 26, 2006 after spending the spring of with the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena Football League. Prior to his sting in the AFL with the Gladiators he was allocated to NFL Europe by the Minnesota Vikings and assigned to Rhein Fire in 2005. The former University of Oregon product spent training camp of 2004 with the Detroit Lions. In limited preseason action in 2006, Fife completed five-of-eight passes for 47 yards and a touchdown and had two rushes for four yards. Hosack, who had played in the first four preseason games, had one reception for eight yards. The Saints signed him on June 29, 2007 after spending the spring with World Bowl runner-up Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europa, where he recorded nine receptions for 289 yards (32.1 avg.) with four touchdowns. In 2006 the former University of Minnesota standout earned All-NFLEL honors with the Galaxy in 2006 as he caught a team-leading 36 passes for 473 yards and four touchdowns. Hosack originally signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2004 but was released by the Vikings on August 31, 2004 before spending the majority of the season on the Vikings’ practice squad. Porter, a rookie from Rutgers, was a two-sport standout at Rutgers excelled in football and track. He signed with the Saints as an undrafted rookie free following the 2007 NFL Draft. While at Rutgers he played in 44 career games (11 starts) for the Scarlet Knights and recorded 94 tackles, five interceptions and 13 passes defensed. IN addition to his exploits on the gridiron, Porter set became a school record-holder in 200-meter sprint and also the 2006 Big East Conference indoor and outdoor champion in the event. The Saints, following the 2007 NFL Draft, signed Sims as a rookie free agent. The former Arkansas Razorback outside linebacker and defensive end played in 49 games during his Razorback career, starting 16 games over four seasons and registered 188 tackles, seven sacks, 16 tackles for loss, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
