Interesting Shockey Article
New Era Scouting » Blog Archive » Stretching the Field: One Man Island
These are just some parts of the article. The enigmatic star has been caused teammates and coaches to pull their hair out since his rookie year, in 2002. Shockey came out early, making comments on the Howard Stern Show about his distaste for the potential of homosexual teammates in the shower. While it was an early sign on his later troubles, much was forgotten due to the promise he showed, winning the Rookie of the Year Award. Throughout the early portion of his career, he was matched up with strong-willed and vocal quarterbacks Kerry Collins, and then Kurt Warner. With the later ascension of quarterback Eli Manning to starter late in the 2004 season, a tumultuous relationship began. It’s no shock now that the rumors are flowing of a possible Shockey trade. There are strong indications a draft day deal involving the New Orleans second round pick and third-year safety Roman Harper for Shockey will go through, although both teams are denying it at the moment. Shockey has even been rumored to say that he’s looking forward to being on the Saints, and has started to put interest on real estate in the region. On paper, like most of Shockey’s career, this move makes sense. Sean Payton’s offense would greatly benefit from the presence of a reliable receiving option at tight end. Shockey would draw down a safety for coverage, which would not allow teams to double cover Marcus Colston over the top, or to bracket him. Throughout his career, Shockey has also done a good job of moving the chains in the past, and is a flawless route runner. The Saints red-zone packages would also benefit from the presence of Shockey who would increase their options down in enemy territory, and limit their predictability. Also, quarterback Drew Brees has a high comfort level in his tight ends, and loves to distribute the ball to them. Not since his time in San Diego with Antonio Gates has Brees had such a capable tight end. |

Didn't know they would taste different in the shower. |

Re: Interesting Shockey Article
Shockey hopefully can mature as he gets a little older and maybe reuniting with Payton will make him a little less of a locker room distraction should the trade happen.

Re: Interesting Shockey Article
I don't think that I've reiterated in a while that any move on the #10 pick that doesn't result in the acquisition of a solid defensive starter is a bad idea. Also any move that trades even a somewhat solid defensive starter (such as Harper) for an offensive player is also a bad idea.
I just feel like jawing a bit today. It almost seems like folks are so interested in acquiring offensive talent so that they can stock their fantasy football teams. "Can you imagine Brees' and Shockey's stats if they play together?" The Saints have 6 TE. SIX! The team thought well enough of two free agents to resign them. Brees threw for nearly 4500 yards with supposedly crappy tight ends last year. I really hope all this Shockey stuff is a smoke screen and that the Saints will use their early draft picks for solid defensive talent that will help the defense get off the field. Just a reminder just in case you hadn't read it in a while. SFIAH |
Super Bowl Championships: New Orleans Saints:1, Carolina:0, Atlanta Chokers: STILL ZERO
Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good. |

Re: Interesting Shockey Article
It very well may be a smoke screen and Im fine if they do not pull off the trade. But would you rather them spend the 10 on Rivers and then spend the 40 on Keller or another TE in the draft. Granted it is only a mock draft, but many a experts are predicting the Saints going after Keller. I like Harper but think that he is expendable. KK or Bullocks is versatile enough to make the move to SS with the other manning the FS spot. We will have to make a move in the draft or maybe after the June 1 cuts to get some additional depth at the position, but I would rather see the Saints make the trade for Shockey then not make the trade and get Keller. Keller will be a good player IMO, but Shockey is a proven playmaker. Im not overly pushing for the trade but would not be disappointed if it happened.

Re: Interesting Shockey Article
Michael Smith just reported on ESPN's On The Clock that he believes Shockey will be a Saint before the draft EITHER for the Saints 2nd round pick OR Roman Harper and a late second day pick. Im all down with Harper and a later round pick. That still gives us the flexibility to possibly make a run at Dorsey as speculated by swapping 1s and giving our 2 or to still get Rivers at 10 and a CB at 40.
