It is really short-sighted to say only one team has a shot at winning an OT game in the NFL. I mean really, REALLY short-sighted...maybe it was you who wrote that piece in Bleacher Reports about outlawing onside kicks to start the second half?

A bad call can happen at any time. Whether there's one possession or 2 possessions, or 10 possessions... no number of possessions is going to minimize that if that bad call happens to be what ends the game for you. Just like the Packers this year who got shafted by a bad call (or a bad non-call) or the Cardinals in SB 43 on the last play of their last drive in regulation.

And yes, games going longer than their slotted TV time can present a problem for advertisers. There are a lot of intricacies when it comes to cost rates and air time.

You mean the team that gets to kick has to kick it to the other team and then they can't field a defense or something?

The "better" team should've been able to win it in regulation. If they can't win it in regulation, are they really the better team?

And you are telling me an OT game cannot be lost on a bad call or fluke play?

..and speaking of TV and commercial times, games going longer than the time slotted for them will wreck havoc with network programming and advertising money, not make it better.
i cried a little when i realized i agreed with everything you said and then i got a little happier when i read the last thing you wrote

this last super bowl was the most watched television show in history

football brings some of the highest ratings of any show in the world and there are only a handful of games actually shown on TV.....and they are only shown on the weekends during football season

a longer game would not wreak havoc on a television station, only make it better because fans want to watch good football games......not blowouts

OT should be left like it is because both teams do get a chance to score....regardless of who wins the coin flip

but your argument about the TV stations getting upset doesnt really make sense to me

Re: New OT Rule

Maybe "wreck havoc" is too strong a term... I am not talking about the Superbowl, I am talking about the regular season.
TV slots are priced in a variety of ways, including the length of the ad, the show they're aired on, and the time of the day they are aired on, among other factors.

.. and people don't necessarily want to watch a longer game. Just because a game goes into overtime it means the game is exciting. Sure the die hard fans of the teams will watch a 7-7 game go into overtime (heck people watch the Lions) but the causal fan will not.

One game was decided by a safety (0.3%).
There have been 15 ties (4.6%)."

Exact quote from USA Today, 52%-43%. Seems close enough to me. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Leave it as it is. The team that loses the coin toss just needs to step up their defense. This game does have TWO sides of the ball.
I was all for switching until I saw this post...I never realized it was that close. It seemes like first team kicks a field goal a lot more than that.

Re: New OT Rule

If you want to change anything why not just play a 7:00 minute OT period just like regulation and like they do in the NBA. I sat thru 3 OT periods in January at a Rockets game. If it is still tied after the first 7:00 minutes than play sudden death.

Remember when games used to last close to four hours and the league sped up the game to keep it close to three hours? I don't know if they want to have a game that they can't control the length.

Re: New OT Rule

I agree with Toby that a tie is not the end of the world in regular season. We had ties in football for 60 years, and everybody did just fine. I agree with Gumbeau that the college system is stupid.

If you dont want to lose the game to a coin toss, then win the damn game in regulation. Or come out and play defense.

Does anybody remember we lost the coin toss to the Redskins in OT, then got a turnover & won the game?

ScottF touched on the final answer, though. If they extend OT, then the NFL can sell more commercials. Guess what they're gonna do????

The last thing I want to see is more change. The worst thing the NFL can do is **** with a good thing.

If you must have change, here's one. Eliminate replay, and call the game on the field, like we did for 90 years. Replay is just a 2nd chance to blow the call. My kids were bored to death by the last game they saw. No wonder they watch wrestling. Just play ball.

Nawhh man ... just keep playing till you drop ... last man standing wins! Plus make every team go for two points in OT after the first overtime.

I would love to see the Saints whoop up on the Vikings in a six overtime game and win with yet another interception of Favre by #22 for a pick 6.

As fas as replay, we need more of it. And put a chip in the dang ball to more accurately move the chains and score a TD! Some of those spots leave a lot to be desired. Also make super long fieldgoals worth more, like a 3 pointer for a 50 yarder or longer. And get rid of the super long yardage penalty for pass interference. 15 yards is fine.
