Owners pass Overtime rule proposal

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; More drama = more money. I would have left it alone. The team winning the toss still has to execute and so does the D. You have the whole game to produce a different outcome. Can they defer it?...

I would guess that the team that is designated to receive the kick (wins toss) is on guard so to speak once the kick happens. So if they give up an outsides kick or fumble kickoff, the other team gets to win with a FG. Basically no different than getting the kick and going three and out.

It also bugs me that this is a playoff change only. They are admitting in a sense that reg season games are less important than post season somehow. Many times a late season game is a playoff game. I understand their "reasons", I just don't agree.

You won't be bugged for long. The owners will vote in May to amend this to both the REGULAR SEASON and THE PLAYOFFS. That vote will look just like this vote did.

Re: Owners pass Overtime rule proposal

Well, it has been discussed for years but now something is going to be done about it.

The new rules proposal for overtime in the NFL was passed at the owner meetings in Orlando, Florida. By a vote of 28-4, there will now be new overtime rules in the NFL for just the playoffs but changes could come for the regular season at the next meeting in May. 24 votes were needed to pass the proposal through and I'm willing to bet that New Orleans Saints' coach Sean Payton was one of the 4 against.

You would lose your bet. The four teams that voted against were Buffalo, Minnesota, Baltimore, & Cincy.

And the coaches had no vote whatsoever. The owners voted on this.

Re: Owners pass Overtime rule proposal

It's a good change IMHO. Both teams get a shot at the ball unless the following happens:

Team A scores a touchdown after winning the toss

Team B wins on an onside kick after losing the toss, and kicks a field goal or touchdown

Team B wins after losing the toss and scores a defensive TD or gets a turnover and scores a field goal or touchdown

Team B wins if it gets a safety or pick 6 after losing the coin toss

If team A gets a touchdown they win the game

If team A scores a field goal they must kickoff to Team B. If Team B scores a touchdown they win. If they kick a field goal to tie, the game becomes sudden death again.

If Team A scores neither a TD or Field Goal and punts to Team B, it becomes sudden death at that point.

Everyone got that? Your welcome!

Did you get this from somewhere or are you just assuming this is what it is?

How is it fair that one team can win with a FG because they lost a coin toss, but not coin toss winner, especially if the coin toss winner actually never gets a possession?

I got it from somewhere. Also, Im extremely intelligent and it made logical sense before I got it from somewhere and I thought of this format for almost 10 years now.

Don't hurt yourself patting your own back; still, the same issue persists: how is it fair that the team that lost the coin toss can win the game on the first possession of the game with a FG, but the team that won the coin toss cannot win the game on the first possession of the game with a FG?
