Re: Saints Depth Chart 2013
Training Camp Battles Are Setting Up Nicely...
Reserve Quarterback (aka Deuce) Luke McCown has both experience with the Saints and has starting experience that even Chase Daniel didn't offer; and while Senaca Wallace was out of football last season, his value is as a scout team quarterback for the defense; Griffin has never been surrounded by talent, but after having played in the college version of the Saints offense by former Saint Coach Curtis Johnson, he may be one of the local surprises that makes this team... Running Back It's the Pierre-Sproles-Ingram Committee; then, enjoy... Travaris Cadet vs Khiry Robinson - this will be a good matchup and the winner will be the guy that gets the intangibles right (ie blocking, reads) which will earn Coach's trust and so a roster spot... Wide Receiver Colston, Moore, Roby should make the roster; the fourth spot is Toon's to lose; Morgan exposed himself more with the DUI - but it's his mental inconsistency that handicaps him; Stills may have the pro groomed pedigree - but I've not been impressed with his maturity in his interviews nor his grasp of what's been thrown his way; Hakim's speed is amazing, but he'll have to earn coaching staff trust as quickly as he can run to make the team; the rest will be solid, but not enough to justify seven receivers... Perimeter Line (Tackles) Left Tackle battle more about how fast Armstead can adapt than Armstead vs. Charlie Brown, whom the latter is not trusted by Coach... Jason Smith will probably move to the right as he offers good measurables and could be coached up to correct some playing deficiencies setting up a nice challenge for incumbent Zach Strief who had a down year (injuries)... Interior Line Should remain same with Evans, de la Puente, and Grubbs with Olsen in reserve; remaining spot will be filed by one of a good group of candidates; look for Tiller to show he's gotten better to make the roster... Tight End Graham, best TE on the planet backed up by a great FA signing Watson; who will be the second best No.2 TE in the league; nice battle for No. 3 TE, keep an eye on Idaho State alum Josh Hill... |

Re: Saints Depth Chart 2013
Training Camp Battles Are Setting Up Nicely...
Nose Tackle Bunkley played very well for Denver in their 34 before signing with the Saints last season; he's considered by some though to be undersized... But it's the drafting of Big John Jenkins (R3, Georgia) that will be the key for this and the coming seasons as to whether the 34 move is successful, quickly; expect Isaako Aaitui (FA) to provide solid depth at this position... Defensive End Cameron Jordan is poised to begin his prime; surprised that the already slow Will Smith didn't remain at the opposite end position, but Hicks looks to be a good complement to Jordan in the new 34 Defense; Tom Johnson and Kenyon Coleman (FA) look to be excellent depth at the ends... Outside Linebacker The move of Will Smith to this position is surprising in that he was already a slow, low impact DE - so moving him to LB will make him faster?!? This is set for failure... Then the Saints drafted another 43 DE in Rufus Johnson - what gives?!? Johnson will need to get up to speed and talent of the NFL level, but he's a feel-good story Saints fans like to have... Junior Galette returns, but he is a small 43 DE that may be miscast as an OLB - guess we'll find out; the best suited OLB may be the UDFA Chase Thomas, though he lacks the measurables - he may be the big surprise once the pads are put on... The signing of Victor Butler was suppose to be the second biggest impact for the Saints, his injury now makes him a non factor and opening the way for Martez Wilson to finally crack the starting lineup; With this opportunity we finally get to see Martez play?!? Inside Linebacker Curtis Lofton's play should only improve as coverage responsibilities will now be broken up among the extra linebacker; Jon Vilma, David Hawthorne, and Will Herring will fulfill the Will Linebacker duties though can't see all making this squad at their salary slots; Chamberlain, Spagnulo add, may be a poor fit for the 34 though he's an excellent special teams player; look for the high-motor Eric Martin (UDFA) and the overlooked Kevin Reddick (UDFA) to make a strong case to make this roster... Cornerback The signing of Keenan Lewis definitely takes this unit up a notch, though Jabari Greer has been very good, he's getting older and has missed a few games due to injuries; Patrick Robinson may just have been poorly coached by Gregg Williams and misused by Steve Spagnuolo, and this will be his third coach in as many years and probably will be his last chance to make an impact on this squad or join a dubious list of first round busts by the Saints brass; really like Corey White toughness and fire, with a year to adjust to the talent and speed of the NFL, we'll have a better idea of his role with the Saints; look for Rod Sweeting (UDFA), Ryan Steed (FA) or Chris Carr (FA) to round out this group which looks to bounce back... Safeties While some were surprised the Saints took Kenny Vaccaro (R1) with such a deep draft for safeties, others lauded the pick as an improvement and solution that has been the disaster of the Safety tandem of the overpaid Roman Harper and FA to-be Malcolm Jenkins... Of note, Harper and Jenkins, appeared to be outplayed by the reserve safeties Rafael Bush and Isa Abdul-Quddus when given an opportunity; but their sampling size is small and they may not have played enough to be exposed as well... The signing of Jim Leonhard (FA) may suggest that better reads were needed by the Safeties as Leonard is known as a heady, though undersized safety... And will Jerico Nelson get a real chance to make an impact with this unit?!? This should prove to be an interesting battle... |

Re: Saints Depth Chart 2013
The position battles would be more compelling if some of the veteran contracts weren't guaranteed or if salary cap escalators didn't make it prohibitive for them to be cut/released...
Vilma, who I like, was jettisoned from the Jets because of a move to the 34 defense... Will Smith would look more natural in a pink tutu than as an OLB in the 34... I don't see Galette having a rounded game to play OLB and will be gone by next season... Some of you guys have noticed, rightfully, that Martez Wilson should be playing on the Inside with Lofton... I know the Bama alum love Harper, but he's been the biggest eyesore in the Saints secondary and only got relief when Jenkins would have one of his mental lapses... Hoping the Cornerback corps can stay healthy, they should help some... But it's gonna come down to what is always does, controlling the LOS and that leads to limiting the run and an Honest Pass Rush... |

Re: Saints Depth Chart 2013
I think Bunkley's position is in the black for now. It may change by mid season, but he'll be a solid starter at the beginning of the season.
I see Leonhard as right behind Jenkins or in front of Harper. I could also see Coleman moving up in front of Jordan. Aannnnddddd... Have you ever seen ol' Will in a pink tutu? Maybe not quite as unnatural as you might think... |
