Maybe he was bad in SD because Phillip Rivers SUCKS!!!!

Maybe he'll sign the league minimum or FREE since he's already getting paid from the Chargers.

Sean doesn't make this move unless he sees it as helping. Plain and simple

Re: Meachem breaking news

Toon was spitting blood in the Miami game and was going to have chest X-rays. Maybe he's not ready for this Sunday. I just find it odd that we would re-sign him now.

Re: Meachem breaking news

Toon returns: Nick Toon said he's feeling fine after exiting last Thursday's final preseason game against the Miami Dolphins early.

Toon, who made an athletic diving reception that was called back due to a penalty, hit the ground hard on his way down, and left the game spitting up blood. Leaving was more of a precautionary measure than anything else, he said.

"They were just being cautious, as they should be," Toon said. "Nothing major. I'm good to go. I practiced today and I'll be ready to roll on Sunday."

I hear that Matty Lice is almost pregnant, too. If either are confirmed, it will be big news indeed.

While I agree that at this price he would be benificial, we need to use the roster spot for a linebacker. We can bring the Meachums and Hendersons of the world in if there is an injury. I dont get this move. I never cared much for him anyway.

Colston, Moore, Stills, Toon, Meachem, Graham, Watson, Sproles, Thomas, Ingram, and Brees.

Wow.

It's also not immediately clear what role Meachem will play with the Saints now that young backup receivers Kenny Stills and Nick Toon have emerged as players who look ready to make an impact. But it makes perfect sense for the Saints to at least try and recapture the chemistry that existed when Meachem was a part of their offense from 2007-11.

My guess is they won't try to force him into the mix right away -- as long as their top four receivers stay healthy. But the Saints know they can depend on Meachem if they need a replacement at some point. And in the meantime, if he starts to regain his prime form, then maybe he'll force their hand.

I think Colston is hurt more than we think.

Just a hunch.

I expect Moore to potentially take over the #1 spot with toon/stills/tanner/meach rotating #2 and a combination of more than one on the field at any given time.

I'm good with this, nice insurance policy against Colston and Moore's injury histories.

Re: Meachem breaking news

I LOVED Meachem when he was in New Orleans. I thought he was desperately underrated and a complete nuisance to cover. The amount of deep balls he took in, especially on 3rd and longs seemed to be unprecedented.

The reality is this though; if we have someone injured and we are looking to replace AND Meachem passes a physical including concussion tests then this is a fantastic signing for us. Fantastic. If we are bringing him in and cutting someone else then I don't get it without additional reasoning.

Most importantly, and especially offensively, I trust this organisation like NO other. We are dynamite. And at the end of the day it is also a business. We aren't losing a roster spot and wasting good money if we didn't believe it delivered genuine value.

Interesting Times!

If he plays like the last few players we have gotten from the Chargers I'll be good with it.

My guess is Reddick gets cut, or maybe Herring if they think Reddick is too valuable to expose on waivers.

I'm gonna guess Vilma is put on IR

Re: Meachem breaking news

I think this is also an ego move on Sean Payton's part too, and I like it.

He's trying to say "Look here's this guy who was pretty good here, he went somewhere else and they said he was washed up, but watch us, we're going to make something of him again."

blackangold 09-03-2013 03:56 PM

Re: Meachem breaking news

dumb move...

maybe we could focus on adding depth to the OLB position before making more offensive signings that wont matter. Mickey too focused on offense, I love what the guy has done but there comes a point where you should change your focus for a few years.

saintsfan1976 09-03-2013 03:56 PM

Re: Meachem breaking news

If Toon is "okay" then why the signing? I'm a bit surprised by this just because it seemed we needed more help at OLB.

no word on who was cut or IR'd

He's on the B-team.

Colston - Toon (Go to receivers with size)
Moore - Tanner (Sure handed slot receivers)
Stills - Meachem (Speed merchants)

While I am not a big fan of the move, I agree. I made a similar comments to Boltsfan more along the lines that Bree's throwing to a WR is a different has different potential than Rivers throwing to a WR.

So as of right now we have a 54 man roster? How long do we have to trim it back down?

We don't have any time, a move had to be made before we could sign we just do not know what it is yet.

As far as I know once the deadline for 53 passes there is no going over. Something has to have been done or the league wouldn't agree to the contract.

I'm very curious as to what that move might be. I love Meachem but, in my opinion, wide receiver is one of the Saints strongest positions. I can't imagine where they could afford to make a cut.

I think we have seen the last of Vilma in a Saints uniform.
