In Football, What is Injured Reserve? (with picture)

That depends on the terms and conditions of their contract I believe.

Re: Meachem breaking news

Many players also make less money if they are put on the IR list, which is sometimes referred to as the reserve/injured list. Players often agree to contracts that include reduced salaries if they go on IR. Often called split salaries, they usually are between 40 percent and 70 percent of the players' normal salaries. Not all contracts include reduced salaries for players who are put on IR. The Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) also sets minimum amounts for players' split salaries

So how does this Effect the W.Smith and Vilma Cap number i wonder

And i'd almost take that swap TheOak 3 for 1 not a bad trade off plus New Yorkers Additudes Suck

Those Terms and Conditions are rarely released much-less read by anyone other than the attorneys. Here is an example, in Tony Romo's contract there was a little clause that went over looked, basically stating he couldn't be franchised.... Dallas ate a huge bullet because of that.

We normally hear about a reduced salary after someone is already on it.

Re: Meachem breaking news

maybe that's there plan with vilma keep him on IR for awhile at a reduced rate then release him when the hit might not be as bad say week 7 or 8

Meachem: 23 TD and 141 receptions. Played 62 games in 4 years as a Saint

Re: Meachem breaking news

Can't say I was surprised Meach came back here; kinda figured it as soon as I heard SD cut him. Some guys just simply do better in certain systems, and Meach knew and played his role here before when his number got called. He's also cheaper this time around, so again this move don't surprise me.

And Chamberlain was brought in from STL for Spags' system...Spags' "Let's-just-have-literally-the-worst-defense-in-history" defensive system ain't here no more, Chamberlain ain't here no more. Good for me.

Re: Meachem breaking news

At least you don't have to worry about Meach chasing the highest bidder. I bet he's the happiest guy in town right now.

Eventhough, Meachem left New Orleans last season, he had his best game of the season in New Orleans. 3 catches/67 yards/ 2 TDs. There's no place like home.

Re: Meachem breaking news

Sometimes you can go home.
It is a good place to be...

Not suprised the front office moved for Meachem.Cheap once year deal i imagine.Had Stills got any injury there would have been a lack of a speed guy to stretch the defense. Makes sense, now if we can sign a OLB with the other spot open ill be happy.
I do like Dunbar as posted on another thread last year he had oer 100 tackles
5 Passes defended,2 Int and 2 FF.I cant see anyone on in the LB core we have matching that

We don't have another spot open; Chamberlain was cut, but since he was already on IR he wasn't taking up a spot

Trust me Im coming back very soon probably before next season starts can't wait to get out of New York. this place is so crappy and expensive i pay 11.87 for a pack of smokes and 4.32 for a gallon of gas

Re: Meachem breaking news

This could be a good singing...

a.) Probably got him for dirt cheap.

b.) Payton is back.

c.) He's very much used to this system.

d.) Less pressure. He is not expected to fill Vincent Jackson's shoes.

So there is almost zero risk in this signing and possibly some gain.

San Diego doesn't make what you'd call stellar decisions when it comes to handling players: Brees, Sproles, Tomlinson, Jackson, Seau, Leaf...

I cant believe some of the whining about a low risk high upside move. I would pick up any player that has a good. Chance of helping add depth and potiential. Meachem averaged 7TDs a season with us. If he doesn't pan out we lose little. IMHO the FO is doing everything it can to find any player that could make us better.

I like this move, it's gonna' pay dividends for the Saints ... like "homecoming" ... Payton's back, Meachem's back, got a new defense ... it's motivating, feels good & puts the locker room in a positive state of mind ...

Prediction: Meachem has his best season in the NFL ... bet..

If that's the case he must have been getting lucky or borrowing some of Drew's IQ the last time around.

Exactly what I was thinking. Meach already has worked with Brees so it would be better than bringing in a fresh face. Big strong WR maybe replacing our big strong wr.............

his short route running stinks and his mid level routes are almost as bad. he is nothing more than a tall Henderson.

even at the veteran minimum of $715,000 for a one trick pony i am still not excited.

I would rather see the money go else were, OLB maybe

If Meachem is the back door fill-in for Colston,
he's going to have to find some traffic hands.
Colston was really good in traffic, almost to a fault.
Brees would stretch him out, he would make the catch, AND take the lick.
Meach I'm not too sure about. Not really a hands catcher. He does the bread basket thing.
Way too easy to knock the ball loose when it's already loose and juggling around.
I hope Colston really isn't hanging by a thread.
