Meachem was not a bust with the Saints, but he certainly didn't live up to his draft status. First-round pick should have a career high of more than 44 catches in a season.

Still, he was a useful player.

Add me to the list of people that hate this move I just don't see the sense in it at all. So let me get this straight thats 7 wrs now 5 RBS 2 TES 5 inside lbers and only 3 OLB 2 out of those 3 coming off recent injury 1 of which Martez has not been able to stay health since he has been here. No wonder our defense sucks if Mickey and Sean only care about getting more Offensive players. IF we don't start bring in some defensive talent My thread on the next DC isn't looking so dumb anymore is it

{ THE Three or so people that seem to have all the answers to every thing that's posted on this site can rip me apart for saying this but I really don't care it must be tough for you guys to get in a room with brains and egos as big as yours }

Im thinking that we may be looking for something in return if we sign meachem and take that dead money off of SD's hands. At least a pick or player or Idk.. if we sign him before Sunday that's the only benefit I see.

6 WRs, 3 TE's; and if they're going to play in a 4-3 formation as often as it sounds like, the OLB situation is not that big of a problem.

Maybe Colston's foot is worse than we think?

I dunno, he played a couple snaps vs Miami and didnt seem injured.

Re: Meachem breaking news

7 wrs mostly due to injuries.. Colston isnt 100 a lot of the time and we have like 2 newbs included in that if Meachem comes its because he knows the system and backup incase someone gets hurt (nothing like having someone who knows the system) and most teams have two tes so u can't blame them for that. we have two good tes at that. I'm thinking that we kept 5 rbs because mainly Cadet would be Kr and Khiry was just too good to leave it to chance he'd get through waivers. I don't really care if Meachem comes back because we were solid without him.

I don't see how 3 OLBs is any less of a problem whether in the 4-3 or 3-4? Both formation schemes utilize 2 Outside Linebackers...

But I don't see it as a problem anyway when you have ILBs who can play outside, Hawthorne & Herring for certain and I bet Reddick and Humber could play outside as well if need be.

And Ryan lines players up all over and moves them around a lot pre-snap, so inside/outside doesn't really matter

Re: Meachem breaking news

Yeah someone help me from doing the research here but what is the contract worth (if reported yet) and what financial hit are we taking outside of that contract (if any).

Also we all know there is a reason for this move. It wasn't on a whim or because 'he did ok last time'. The only solid experience we have at WR is Colston and Moore. Let's say Colston goes down. I don't feel confident only having the one real experienced head at WR. So I like seeing someone who is more of a vet AND knows our organisation and our staff and our playbook. That makes sense to me.

New formation devised by SP with a 5 WR set. Failturds will never see what hit them. :clown:

olb is a problem area when all of them are coming off injury even harlason pectoral muscle can and probally will be a problem again at some point our defense sucked last yr and all those guys playing inside lber where second and third string for a reason what makes you all think they are all of a sudden be allpros at another postion that they haven't played there is a big difference to playing inside and outside

Haralson is coming back from a torn triceps tendon, not really a big deal. And Ryan uses his OLBs to rush the passer 80+ percent of the time. What makes that so different than what Galette, Wilson were already doing?

Hell Wilson and Galette both played OLB in college...

Agreed. Meachem is more valuable to the Saints than the Chargers.
Looking at Sproles, Chargers have a way of not utilizing talent correctly.

That said, those screaming for some LB help are correct. This team has a deficit at many positions on defense. Front office and coaches are swift to pile up wide-outs. We have ample depth at wide-out, don't think we have a deficit there.

It's a proven fact Drew Brees and our offense are 10 times more potent with even a mildly effective defense. Years our defense has been depleted or weak, Drew throws more int's and the offense is less effective because they're overcompensating for a hapless defense that cannot stop an opponent.

Rather see some defensive help, but I don't run the front office.

Would of rather have Jo Lonn Dunbar back. Meachem signing is a head scratcher.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but we didn't push Meachem out, he found a bigger contract in FA and left.

you offensive Fanatics can say what you will cause it obvious that's all you give a crap about but if they don't start thinking about the defensive side of the ball you can kiss any hope of the playoffs good bye. say we do make the playoffs all of the other playoff teams are probably going to have some pretty good offense too that will be able to match our scoring and probably be able to stop our passing game sometime but will we be able to do the same

+1. I wasn't all that shocked that things never worked for Bobby with the bolts but they (San Diego) had unrealistic expectations for him. He was never the 'go to' guy but a very decent role player while in N O land. I wouldn't expect him to have 90+ catches a season but he still has ability to stretch the field. I too would have preferred us to address the OLB position but for what it's worth lets see how it works out with Meachem.

TRUST AND BELIEVE.

I had a feeling he would be gone as soon as Spags was fired, guess I wasn't totally wrong.

What injury did he truly have?

I had a feeling this was coming as soon as the Chargers released him. Obviously this is the best thing for Meachem, but I don't think he's better than what we already have.

I thought Preston Parker would make the team before Tanner would, though. No lack of depth for sure.

So if we released Chamberlain and put Vilma on ir which would pretty much balance each other out and sign Meachem does that mean we have a roster spot open?

I'm assuming his contract was voided, due to him not disclosing his injury...

Only 400,000, so not a big loss either way

I believe the 'dead' money stays on the Chargers as they released him; had there been a trade, then the situation changes...

I want know if w. smith and vilma are going to receive there full salaries our a reduced salary cause they are on injured reserve as league rules state some players may get 40-70% of there salaries if place on IR
In Football, What is Injured Reserve? (with picture)

Settle down there Tex, we all understand your frustration - I certainly do...

We know the hand we've had; I was as frustrated that we're signing WR's instead of making moves to acquire some front seven (OLB) help...

We're an offensive team that needs a complementary defense and for better or worse, we stayed loyal to Will Smith and Jon Vilma and now the check is due...

Post Week 1, alot can happen, and does because of the CBA - Veteran Guarantee clause that if a vet is on the team at the start of the season, the contract is guaranteed...

We're so damn close to the cap, that moves have to be done in such a way to make sure we've got maneuvering ability to navigate the season...

We just need to make sure we get a win against our main rival to start the season and then get the rest of the house in order post haste/post Week 1...

That said, I just didn't like Meachem; he showed up out-of-shape as a rookie and was a tremendous bust; and I'm trying to understand what possible role he could play...

Yeah that was the biggest thing for me with Parker. He's not only a more well rounded receiver but was more versatile than Tanner. I like Andy, he seems like a hard working kid who could be good with a team that has less talent than ours, but I think on this team he beat out TWO more deserving players in Roby and Parker.
