That being said, when would it be a good idea to draft our "Aaron Rodgers?" I'm curious since many of you think Drew will play forever.

You have to admit on the Drew scale, this was pretty weak. I'm sure he'd be the 1st to tell you that.

Drew still has 5 productive years left in this league. He's set up nicely to restructure in 2015 for a reasonably priced QB with the skills to get us to the Superbowl.

Had we gotten the 2 seed I have no doubt we'd be playing next week.

Drew is a pure pocket passer. And when he has time, he'll slice and dice ANY defense.

I expect particular attention will be paid there this offseason.

BUT -

How about our damn DEFENSE!!??

Is anyone else as excited as I am? We've got some STUDS!!

There's a lot of silly in this thread but this is the silliest. If you knew what the Saints had at QB throughout it's history you couldn't possibly say this.

The "Jimmy's soft" and "Payton shouldn't be calling plays" stuff is pretty dopey too. The Saints are one of the best teams in the NFL and some of the fans want to get rid of their best contributors.

Just like any team, the Saints have weaknesses. But a year after the commissioner takes draft picks, takes away the Head Coach, suspends the GM for half the season, and generally messes with the team as a whole, the Saints have a solid team.

I'm disappointed that they lost to Seattle of all teams but I'm not about to give up on the team's strongest attributes.

I loved r defense with the injuries we had, and still held it together our offense was ranked high but mistly cause of when we played at home.. Our defense stayed on the field for way too long our offense would get off the field fast in some games..Rob ryan did one hell of a job.. Sean payton is a top coach but in some games his play calling was a nightmare.. We had many chances to put our self in good postions in regular season, and we failed 2.. Nobodys fault but r own.. Who dat!!! Next year just wait and see how good rob ryans defense will be

A very good season with Payton back.

Massive improvement on defense under Ryan. We really have something to build on!

Our downfall was losing to Jets and Rams and not winning the NFC South title securing #2 seed and home field for the playoffs. Never should have lost to those teams. 2013 Saints are good but not good enough to get to the Super bowl playing on the road.

Seattle is a very good team. They beat us. Congrats to them. We needed to play our best game of the year to win and we didn't.

One gripe...we call too many screen passes. We killed a number of drives in the Seattle game with failed screen passes. The screen is a deception play. You don't deceive anyone when you are predictable.

We have probably two, max three more years to win another Super Bowl in the Brees era. It can be done! Who Dat?!

No *****ing and moaning from me. I like this team and I think we are even better next season. We have a good defense and I feel like we will be even better next year.

I thought the refs allowed a lot of BS from their CB's and Safeties. Can't stand that BS.

We have a good team and I am pumped for next year. Oline will be better next season too. If our D is as closed to as good next season as this and we sure up that Oline, look out man, look out

Cause he's 34. In three years he'll be 37. That's pretty old for a football player.

I hope he'll be around longer but who knows.

Manning and Brady are 36, 37, and they look to have a few more years left easily.

Does Brees age faster than those two?

Personally, I think with Drew's training regimine, will be able to play longer than Farve did, if he wants to.

But you can't really blame anyone for assuming a 37 year old QB would retire when his contract is up.

Well, not if you don't give him enough protection.

Re: The official ***** and moan thread

Some of the things in this thread are ridiculous. This game, like most playoff games came down to a few moments and Seattle won them all. I look at the 1 turnover in the game and Seattle turned that into a TD. I also look at the 2 shanked punts (1 from each team) which are like turnovers. Seattle got a FG on our shanked punt, we failed to convert on a 4th down and came away with 0 points. You look at those 3 moments where momentum was up for grabs and Seattle got the job done. We were right there with the top seed on the road and had our chances, just couldn't convert.

We have a lot to look forward to and there's no need to blow this team up. You guys know there's 31 other teams that would be lining up for Jimmy Graham if we didn't resign him. Drew Brees is a top 5 QB with plenty of good years ahead of him. On defense we have some great young players like Lewis, Hicks, Jordan, Galette and Vaccaro to build around.

This years draft I'd really like to see us draft a playmaking LB/S/CB in the first round who can force some turnovers because that was the biggest weakness of our defense. If we don't go this route then I'd like to see us grab a big, physical WR like Kelvin Benjamin (who is expected to go right around where we pick). The NFL seems to be allowing DB's to be a little more physical and a guy like Benjamin has the potential to get off those bumps and make some plays. This is important because a lot of teams that are going to be good in the NFC for the next few years (SF, Seattle, Carolina) are physical teams and our receivers aren't great at against these press corners.

Look, I'm bummed that the season is over. I knew the odds were against us winning 3 in a row on the road but I kept hope. Didn't work out this year but it should give us plenty of motivation going forward. Who Dat!

Very true. And I'd even take it another step and say how whole team is playing will be a factor as well. If he's 37 on a Super Bowl caliber team, that's gonna factor in his decision to come back as well.

It's real simple, exactly like yesterday our offense did NOT execute and get the job done.
In the Carolina game sCam Newton had 1 completion in the second half that broke our backs. The Panthers then got a short pass for TD just after. We contained them the entire half, but turnovers, missed opportunities on 3rd down, stalled drives, dropped balls and poor execution on offense lost us that game.

No different yesterday. We had Seattle on the run in the second half and had the ball, but forced to play field possession game only because the offense was simply not able to execute. If any points were given away, we gave away 7 points on 1 turnover. All of it proved to be too much.

I seriously cannot blame the defense for anything this season. A complete turnaround if you ask me. We have a talent laced offense that was unable to get the job done. Even when the o-line gave Brees 10 seconds to pass, wide receivers were simply NOT open.

I would cut the fat at ALL receiver positions and cut costs against salary cap there first, then bring in kids who want to fight for catching the football (like our current receivers did before they got paid big time), and finally beef up the NEWLY improved o-line. Brady is going to the AFC championship with a beefy o-line and NO-NAME kids and journeymen at wide receiver. We need to follow this model.

Let me take that blame off corey white even though he did get beat i blame our offense.. Can ya belive that we have offense problems for the first time since 2006 and now we praise our d.. But i love it and hate it.. If we had the same offense too go together with this defense.. Superbowl hands down.. Now we had to watch the panthers stink up the joint, but if it was us we would have got to the superbowl

I think this was the root of frustration with the fan base. Defense did what so many, myself included, asked - deliver a top 10.... to 15 (at least) defense. I long said if we had a defense ranked 15 or above overall we would march to the super bowl. 2009 was similar with extremely high take-aways.

So defense showed up in '13..... and the offense SUCKED wind! Saints fans are trained to expect a shoot-out on offense and hope the defense can slow the opponent down. Exactly what happened in '09-10 superbowl season. Collectively as Saints fans, we do not have the palette to appreciate a defense. We wait for the offense to come onto the field of play, so the frustrations run with our offense.

Our defense was stingy, even after losing greer and vaccarro. Or d-line started to get nasty. Best top 4 defense to never get "named" in the NFL. We just don't know how to take it with an impotent offense. Dome Patrol era, the offense was a wet rag - everyone waited for the defense to come on the field. People would go get beers or nachos when the offense was on the field. Now we're trained for the opposite and we don't appreciate what our defense accomplished this season.

Drew Brees has reverse Tony Romo disease. Plays good in the 4th quarter but not the first 3.

The Dude 01-12-2014 05:52 PM

What aggravates me about this year

Is that every game we lost we lost because of stupid mistakes. Problems like bad coaching, lack of personnel, injuries, etch are hard to fix during the course of the season but mistakes are fixable and we didn't do that.
Too many turnovers, penalties, dropped balls. We had the pieces to win it all this year. I don't remember one game where a better team beat us. I remember us beating ourselves. If we had gone out and played good mistake free football and gotten beat by a better team it wouldn't be so bad but we lost because of dumb mistakes.

Brees may had an off year but its hard n ot to throw interceptions when you are running for your life. A younger Brees may have been able to scramble a bit more but he needs a solid line now more than ever. I think we need to replace DLP, brown, and maybe even Strief if we have the money. Brees will come off his contract because he knows that if he doesn't get protection he won't have many years left to cash in on that contract.

Jimmy Graham has been catching a lot of flack lately, but he balled early in the season before the injury. I was at Sal and Judys today and got into a conversation with a guy who is a podiatrist. He said it is very painful to run with that injury but the big problem is pushing off. Its hard to plant your feet which is why he was having problems getting separation and getting handled on the line. Its hard to push past the defender at the line if you can't plant your feet. Lucky for us I think this will hurt his price tag in our favor and will come back next year better than ever.
Brees is still the man and I think he can play at an elite level for 3 more years behind a solid line. I do however think that we need to draft a legit QB in NEXT years draft. A first rounder that will fit into the trends of todays and tomorrows NFL. He can learn behind Brees a couple years like Rodgers and learn from the best.

Anyway if we get a couple of good lineman and some help at safety and corner we will be fine for the next few years. Easier said than done I know. Jenkins and Harper should walk so we have to upgrade there. Hopefully Greer is not done and we can have him for a couple more years with a young stud behind him getting ready to take over.
Hats off to Rob Ryan has to be the biggest turn around ever. Can't wait to see what his D looks like with all the pieces he brings in healthy.
Hey at least the offseason will be one week shorter!!!!

Number 4 in total offensive yards and number 10 in points scored = "Sucked Wind" and "impotent"?

That's a pretty high standard.

3rd and long killed us against good teams this year. I truely believe in a good run game, it gives you the option on 3rd and short, you can run or pass but a 3rd and 10 everyone in the nation knew what we were going to do, most of the time on 3rd and 1 we used the pass. That is no trust in an O-line at all. Sure was a lot of 3 and out with no one stepping up to be the man. All I can say is we have next season and hope for better results. Still not a bad year, at least we got into the dance.

I was screaming a shorter, more expletive-filled version of this at my TV yesterday.

I don't understand why we completely abandoned the run at key moments; especially in the fourth quarter.

The reason Peyton had such success tonight was the fact that the Chargers couldn't just drop everyone into coverage, sit on routes and screw up the passing game for the Broncos. I can't count how many times defenses did that to our offense this year and the 'Hawks did the same thing yesterday once we stopped running.

The biggest hope I have for next year is that the coaching staff has faith in the run game and we find some balance. Maybe Drew will be able to break 5,000 yards on 1/2 as many passes and actually be able to play a few more years.

SaintsBro 01-12-2014 08:13 PM

Re: The official ***** and moan thread

I held off from venting, but I think this is kinda the moment we get the verdict on the Payton/Brees era. It is what it is. Eight years in, we can take an inventory and see what we really have.

The Saints are what? 1-4 in playoffs on the road under Payton?
Drew Brees is 6-19 on the road, against teams with WINNING RECORDS. He wins 1 in 3.

That's where Rodgers and Brady totally pass Brees up -- not sure of their #'s but I know it's better, esp. Rodgers is lights out against good teams on the road.

This is obviously a big hurdle to get over, and as much as we all love #9, it's starting to look like there IS a ceiling to this era of the team. Maybe there is a top end on what they can reasonably be expected to do. Coach, QB, GM, all of them.

No doubt they're a good team, but how many chances did they have to run the table this year, and frittered them away in poor showings on the road, again and again and again?

To put it simple, they are not built to win on the road -- they don't have the personel or the coach or the QB or the gameplan or the temperament for it. They are great at finesse football, piling up yards and points in the Dome, they're awesome....but the minute they step out of the bubble, they are vulnerable and ordinary, and have long droughts of not scoring ANY points. No one is afraid of an offense that doesn't score points.

So what does this mean, for Brees and Payton and the Saints, in the future? What do we have to look forward to? If they go undefeated at home, and pick off two or three road wins against weak teams, that gets them to ten wins. Ten wins is not really enough anymore to guarantee a playoff spot. They need to pick up more road wins, to run the table, or else it's just not going to work for them. That's the Catch 22.

Despite the drinking of considerable amounts of Kool Aid around these parts, it's clear to me that the ONLY way for them to do it again, is to do exactly what they did in '09 --pile up wins in the beginning of the year, get the #1 seed and home field all the way, and rest their players, while being in that ridiculous position of being #1 seed and also an underdog. Anything else, is not going to get it done -- because statistically speaking, historically they only win one out of every three games on the road against winning teams. They've had several different paths and several different seeds under Sean Payton over the years, and the ONLY one that has worked for them, has been home field all the way.

In hindsight the idea of them suddenly flipping a switch and winning 3 in a row on the road as a wildcard, seems really far-fetched now, doesn't it? They're not cut out for it. They're not built for it.

I would say Graham is one of the best receivers in the NFL.
As a tight end, Graham is a very poor blocker.
Let's not forget that tight end is a blocking end position too.

This thread reads as if our season was a failure.

When starting a project you set expectations and log them to have something to compare against at the end of the project. If you keep moving the goal and changing expectations while it is in progress you are bound to reach a point where you do not meet them.

Before this season started we expected a mid pack defense and to go 10-6 to 11-5 ish? We made it to the playoffs and won the first game.

I would say that this season was a huge success and we ended up exceeding most expectations. Its moot whether defense over whelmed and offense underwhelmed, the end result was equal to or greater than expectations. :bng:

I was at work for the Pats game but I can't bear myself to see it. I read the plays and 400 articles about it, and Ive seen the pass, but I can't rewatch the game.

That L hurt.

It felt momentously bad at the time and it played out that way. Hold up and we get home field until the NFCCG. Get our together for St Loius as well, and we get #1 seed.

And then we gave away the Divisional game last week with even clutc Vets like Morestead fluffing punts.

I guess this thread reads like fail because it was so ~ close.

The stars were not aligned this year. Fun times ahead though... I miss the anticipation, but at least I get to sleep at night.

If I get through this Southern Hemisphere summer without a fleur de lis etched into my skin, I'll be surprised.
