Re: The Sinkhole: Vaccaro #3

They had a blown coverage assignment on a 28-yard pass in the final seconds at Cleveland in Week 2. They had a series of missed tackles on Golden Tate's 73-yard touchdown catch in the final minutes at Detroit in Week 7. Then they got burned by San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick's big arm when they left Michael Crabtree wide open for a 51-yard catch on a fourth-and-10 play this past Sunday (click here for an extensive breakdown).

Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro was the deep safety who decided to roll his coverage to the middle of the field instead of staying back on Crabtree. After watching the tape, Vaccaro admitted Monday that if he could redo it, maybe he would have stayed deeper. But he disagreed with TV analyst Tony Dungy, whom Vaccaro said called him "undisciplined."

"When a guy rolls out, we're taught as safeties, you gotta roll with him. And he was at the far sideline. … Once he shuts down half the field, we close half the field. He just has a cannon, that's it," explained Vaccaro, who said he decided to run up on tight end Vernon Davis in the middle of the field instead because he considered him a bigger threat and had seen Kaepernick make a similar throw on film.

sounds all good and everything except one thing.

worth repeating

"When a guy rolls out, we're taught as safeties, you gotta roll with him. And he was at the far sideline

Kenny bud, you were the last saint on the opposite side of the field. all that other crap does not cut it. you blew it simple and plan. you were responsible for the last line defense to the side he rolled too. from that side of the field deep is were you should have been.

you were too cut him off at the goal line from your position when the play unfolded. not chase Kap or Davis down the field. which by the way you would never have caught because you are not fast enough. you bailed and to make matters worse you gave up any angle of pursuit advantage you may have had.

you blew it. end of story

As who to blame? depends. When we drafted Kenny it was not for his coverage skills or his ability to be a true SS in the NFL. draft over hype? that was not his role in college and that by all odds will never be his role on this team unless we see major changes in his play. he is last for a reason

question is what to do with him?

i guess we ride the horse to the end and see what develops. then decide in the off season. maybe another of our many SS can step up and we can go back to using Kenny at what he does best. A pest all over the field. which in my opinion he maybe one of the best in the NFL at driving players crazy.

Rob Ryan does not escape this one. this is his #1 pick to fit this scheme. he needs to make this work and stop this down hill slide the saints defense is on since the bye week of last year. injuries are no excuse at this point.

IMO use him like you did last year. he is great at it.

For the first time in history, I actually agree with Tony Dungy

Vaccaro is undisciplined, I don't give a crap if Vaccaro disagrees with that assessment

Disciplined players don't make that back breaking mistake he made

You don't stay back when a QB breaks contain. Kap is one of the only QB's who can even physically make that throw.

Maybe KV under estimated Kap's arm strength, no?

To me I think there's an issue with coaching. Will he recover? Probably. He's a good player, just has to get back into the groove of things. I think he just rode his own hype going into the season. He's young, he has time to learn.

For as much crap as people give Byrd he played well for 4 games. No he didn't have any picks but he did have 25 tackles in 4 games and our only turnover. Our defense was complete trash when he was playing, i think if we had him now he would be great.

Probably in the right formation. That 4th and 10 conversion due to the KV blunder turned a W into a L.

Not ready to give up on the kid just yet though.

Re: The Sinkhole: Vaccaro #3

Has he been the same player since he went out with that head injury last year? Maybe it changed the way he plays for the worse.
