That has to be false; Tom Brady restructured his deal a couple years back taking a lot less money... No way in hell would he have been released regardless what he did with the contract

Nope. That was an extension that simply freed space in the year of the new deal. If I remember corectly, Brady got an additional $25M in the form of a signing bonus and future guarantees. That is a good deal different than what happened with Hawthorne.

In that case the team does cut the player to avoid the roster bonus and renegotiates a new deal, or more precisely, signs the pre-negotiated new deal. The previous contract has to be voided before a new one can take its place. Cutting the player is how this is accomplished.

Re: Hawthorne takes pay cut to stay

Both Hawthorn and Lofton showed up a few Sundays.
Both had good 4-5+ tackle games.
But just like ALL the others, they had 1z games, or zeros.
Nobody showed up every week or in back-to-back weeks.
NOBODY had weekly Vilma 8+ numbers...NOBODY.
What we really need is some consistency.
Somebody(s) that can give us some solid play at their spot EVERY week.
Control their niche every week, or at least 12 weeks out of 16.
Every player will get out matched or man handled every now and then.
4 good/decent games out of 16 weeks just won't cut it.
