NFL fines son of former Saints player Craig Heyward for tribute to his late father

The NFL fined the son of former New Orleans Saints running back Craig "Ironhead" Heyward for an in-game tribute to his late father, according to a message posted to Cameron Hayward's Twitter account.

Heyward, a defensive end for the Pittsburgh Steelers, played with the words "Iron" and "Head" written on a black strip below each eye as a tribute to his father, who died of brain cancer at age 39 in 2006.

The NFL fine for violating a rule against the display of personal messages on the field is $5,787, according to the league.

The apparent fine has occurred in the middle of a month during which the league offers the use of pink apparel as a show of support for breast cancer.

Heyward ran for 1,813 yards and 13 touchdowns in five seasons with the Saints from 1988 to 1992

If you look at it in general, I Think the NFL is in the right in banning personal messages on the uniforms and/or player. Otherwise it would become a slippery slope and you would see messages against gay marriage, for abortions, against guns, for guns, a shout out to a side chick etc. They have to draw a line and sometimes, like this time, it sucks.

I totally agree with this policy, especially about politics, but you should be able to pay homage to your own Dad, esp. when he was an NFL player.

They didn't fine him for the tribute to his dad, they fined him because it's against the rules to write anything at all on your eyeblack
