Howard to Cowboys for Dat Nguyen and 2nd round pick (?)
When I first read this, I thought \"Nooooooooo!\"
Dat Nguyen is undersized and will be in trouble here in NO. Then I looked at a few things: (1) He is 5\'11\" and 238 lbs. While he is a bit short, his weight is about in line with a lot of mobile MLBs. Does anyone have any idea of his 40 speed? Not that it really matters since he does actually make plays sideline to sideling. (2) Then I thought, maybe he\'ll get pushed around here in NO, since our DL is weak in the middle. It seems that Glover at 282 lbs and Carson at 305 lbs are actually smaller than our interior linemen with Green 320 lbs and Young at 298 lbs. (3) Then I thought, well maybe our guys cannot make plays the way that Glover and Carson can. Not so! While Carson and Glover had 43 and 41 tackles respectively and 0.5 and 7 sacks - for a total of 84 tackles and 7.5 sacks, our two (using Green who didn\'t start every game this season) had 27 and 59 tackles for Green and Howard respectively and 2.5 sacks - for a total of 86 tackles and only 2.5 sacks. So Glover is more likely to get into the backfield, but our run defense is about the same in the middle as Dallas\'. (4) Then I thought, maybe Dallas\' ends picked up some slack... really! No I didn\'t. Our boys are first rate there. Did you guys notice that Grant had 78.5 tackles! Damn. That is pretty darned good for an end. Sure he drove up field way too often at the start of the year, but he must have figured out what he was doing at some point about mid-season. Dat Nugyen for president! He may be a bit small, but he had 100 tackles in the last two seasons without guys any better than ours in the middle of the DL. In fact, he may be better protected from opposing linemen here than he was there. Furthermore, since his career started he has only missed 14 out of a possible 96 games. And he got 3 INTs last year from the MLB position, so he plays aginst the pass too! Finally, he is entering his 7th season, so he is still good for roughly another 3 years at this level of production! Make this trade, do it! Finally, if we get there 2nd rounder, will that get us the 43rd pick? Sounds to me like win-win. We\'d only need MAYBE one more LB, and we\'d be getting vetran leadership on the defense! This opens many options. |
