Sources: Cowboys may deal Nguyen to Saints for DE
12:02 AM CST on Saturday, March 12, 2005
By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – The Cowboys, who have not had a defensive end with double-digit sacks in nearly a decade, are in serious negotiations with New Orleans to acquire defensive end Darren Howard, two sources said Friday night.

The sources said the Cowboys are considering trading middle linebacker Dat Nguyen and a second-round pick in April's draft to New Orleans for Howard.

Howard (6-3, 275 pounds), a five-year veteran from Kansas State, had 11 sacks last season and 41 in his career. The former second-round pick had 11 sacks as a rookie.

He is currently involved in a salary dispute with the Saints, who have placed the franchise tag on him, meaning his salary is equal to the average of the five highest-paid defensive ends. If he doesn't sign the contract by 3 p.m. Monday, he and the Saints can't negotiate a long-term deal that would help the Saints lower his salary-cap figure in 2005 and provide him with the long-term security that he desires.

The Saints also franchised Howard last season.

A source close to Howard said he has not yet entered serious contract negotiations with the Cowboys, but the sides have an idea of the parameters for working out an agreement.

Howard's name first surfaced in trade talk three days ago at the club's Valley Ranch training complex, but the talks didn't gain momentum until Friday, according to two sources.

Jeff Ireland, who's running the Cowboys' pro and college scouting department, called SMU coach Phil Bennett last week to inquire about Howard. Bennett was the defensive coordinator at Kansas State when Howard played there.

Not surprised because Parcells was never a big fan of Dat Nguyen. He\'s a pretty good middle linebacker and he\'s asian like me! He has family down here in New Orleans so I wouldn\'t think it would be a big deal to him. Many people believe Watson would make a better OLB so the move would make sense. Watson, Nguyen, and Colby wouldn\'t be too bad. Nguyen may be undersized, but he produces as does Sam Mills, Zach Thomas, etc...

I would prefer Sharper for that 4th rounder though

IMO, Dat Nguyen is a very good MLB. He reminds me a lot of Zach Thomas. He\'s got great instints and is always around the ball.

If this deal goes down this will be one of the most successful offseasons in recent memory.

Kudos to the Saints\' front office.

Surprisingly pleasant news. If what papz says is true and Watson can move to the outside, then I love the acquisition and the 2nd rounder sweetens the deal a little. Dallas has the 42nd pick. Looks like a good move to me.

I like this idea, and the fact that we\'d get an extra 2nd to go with it makes it a can\'t pass up type of deal to me. I hope the FO pulls the trigger on this soon, I\'m chomping at the bit for a LB.

Trade makes sense to me. both teams get what they want. Getting a draft pick on top of a solid LB is sweet! I must say I to was still dissapointed we weren\'t interested in Sharper.

I think in terms of overall quality, Howard is a far more talented player than Nguyen. Yet, in terms of immediate need, Nguyen is more suitable. One has to believe he\'ll carry a more reasonable price tag, as well.

This seems to fit the \"we\'d rather franchise and trade him than just lose him for nothing\" philosophy quite nicely. Nguyen wasn\'t my first choice - in fact he\'d never crossed my mind - but we sure need a LB, and he\'s hands down better than any LB presently on our squad.

I say go for it...

EDIT: Oh yeah, we get a 2nd rounder, too? Heck yes, then...

First off, it\'s GREAT to hear LB mention in the same sentence as SAINTS without the words won\'t, not, or didn\'t.

Nguyen came out of college as a highly touted guy, but his play hasn\'t quite lived up. That said, he is a very consistent above average to good MLB (IMO). He is DEFINITELY a step up for the Saints. Don\'t we already have two seconds? Three second rounders??? Wow.

1st - OT
2nd(a) - OLB
2nd(b) - DT
2nd(c) - S

I just wet my pants with that prospect. Not that I think the Saints will draft that intelligently, but...

I think we only have one second rounder right now.

We only have one right now, but if this trade happens we would be in so much better shape.
1st- Either trade up for DJ or stay and get best CB available or Davis
2nd(from Washington)- Either OT or Lb, depends on what we get with 1st.
2nd(this trade)- Safety, if we don\'t get Davis. Shazor, Bullocks and Pool should be here.
