If anyone is narrow minded, it's the ones that absolutely refuse to blame the offense, even when they turn the ball over 4 times in a game.

No one is saying the offense isn't to blame. We merely state that we need a defense to pick up the slack. YOU CANNOT EXPECT THE OFFENSE TO BE PERFECT ALL OF THE TIME. As someone has already said teams with good defenses and ST do not lose when the offense falters.

Yes! That is what I am trying to say.

We got Atlanta's best this year while they were having a special season...

D.A. managed to stop the second half debacles - that's a positive...

Let's let 'em finish installing this 4-3 defense and see if they continue to improve...

I'm stunned. Payton finally cut the chord... I finally have gained a little respect back for him now. If he is ever going to turn this thing around, THIS HAD to happen. I never thought it would, though. Good for Sean.

Now let's see if he can make some decent hires to replace them. If so, this organization might get out of the quicksand, at last.

Can anyone name one linebacker the Saints have developed under Joe Vitt's tenure?

I can't think of one but there are quite a few "coulda, woulda, shouldas".

Since Vitt has been with the Saints they have drafted.

2007 Marvin Mitchell 7th round.
He was active in 55 games over 4 seasons and started two. 125 tkls 2PD 2FF 2FR
He was an average back up LB. About what you might expect from a 7th rounder.

2009 Stanley Arnoux 4th round
He missed the 2009 season after tearing his achilles in the first minicamp. He was active in 10 games in 2010 but accumulated no stats. He tore his achilles again in game 11 was put on IR and released in following year during training camp. Injuries can be blamed for a disappointing career.

2011 Marten Wilson 3rd round Highly touted out of college and great combine stats, the Saints traded Jamalle Brown and a 5th round pick to get him. He lasted 2 1/2 seasons with the Saints before being waived to make room for Ryan Griffin. Hard to call this anything but a disappointment.

2011 Nate Bussey 7th round Earned a Big 10 honorable mention. Made the practice squad in 2011 and 2012. He played in 1 game but accumulated no stats. Again, most 7th rounders don't make it in the NFL.

2014 Khairi Fortt 4th round Fortt was placed on short term IR before the start of the 2014 season but was waived before activation. Not much can be said for such a short career.

2014 Ronald Powell 5th round Powell was listed as the 15th ranked OLB and projected to be a 5th round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was active in 14 games in the 2014 season where he made 1 tackle. The Saints released him in 2015 and then placed him on IR. The Bears signed him to their practice squad in 2016 and the Seahawks claimed him to their active roster. One tackle for a 5th round pick.

2015 Stephone Anthony 1st round Anthony's first round pick was a part of the Jimmy Graham trade.
Anthony finished his rookie season with 112 tackles, one sack, one interception, and two forced fumbles. He had two scores and led all rookies in tackles. Anthony was also named to the Pro Football Writers Association all-rookie team.
Unfortunately, Anthony seemed to regress during the 2016 season. The Saints moved him to OLB in the offseason, presumedly to take the play calling responsibilities off his shoulders. Anthony was active in only 10 games and made 16 tackles. After a 1st round pick and a solid rookie season, Anthony's sophomore season can only be described as a complete disappointment.

2015 Hau'oli Kikaha 2nd round Considering Kikaha's injury history, he was a risk in the 2nd round. Kikaha had a very good rookie season, recording 32 tackles, 4 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 2 passes defended and 1 fumble recovery. Unfortunately, Kikaha tore is ACL in mini camp and was put on IR for the season.

2015 Davis Tull 5th round Projected to go in the 3rd or 4th round of the draft, Tull was considered a steal in the 5th. He was undersized by NFL standards but had excellent speed, great hands, and "football smarts". Unfortunately, early in the 2015 season, Tull was placed on IR after surgery for a labrum injury in training camp. Tull was released before the 2016 season.

Any one or even quite a few of these can be chalked up to injury or poor draft choice but in my opinion, after 10 seasons, 9 drafted and many undrafted LBs, Vitt should've been able to develop at least one linebacker to meet, let alone exceed his potential. Vitt may be a great locker room guy, and by all accounts he is, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence that he can coach up linebackers.

It's time to move on.

All I am going to say about this major argument is, it appears some want to bash the offense mainly over the Denver game. SERIOUSLY??? They have the best D in the league. They get turnovers on EVERYONE! I was actually impressed we had a chance at winning. Should have been a win. Ya'll are arguing over semantics. We are what our record says we are.

We NEVER once played a complete game this season. Everyone on here knows these firings are a couple years late but better late than never. Lets focus on the offseason and stop arguing over points no one is gonna win. :bng:

Wow, that incredible. I bet that never happens to the Pats. Oh wait, yes it does.

No one said the Offense was perfect all year, but to imply the offense was the problem in 2016 is just plain dumb.

Brady doesn't crap the bed against second tier teams like the lions.

It's just like 2011 playoffs all over again, the offense turns the ball over 5 times versus the 49ers but somehow people still blame the D because they couldnt hold.

I'm sure there was never a resolution in these pages since. These people just want a top defense and half Drew for a SB.

So how were the saints defense supposed to win that game against the giants with the offense scoring just 13 points and holding them to no TDs? How were they supposed to win scoring just 23 points against Denver? What were they supposed to do, take the offense out of fg range? It's just tough kittens they lost at KC right? So a fg was blocked by Carolina. The offense still would have been down 23-9 going into the fourth. If anything it's a tie and going to OT.

In 2009 sb year
Lions............27
Eagles..........20
bills.............7
jets............10
giants...........20
dolphins.......34
falcons..........27
panthers.......20
rams..............23(yes, the 1-15 rams)
bucs............7
[/b]patriots....17[/b]
Washington....30
falcons...........24(against a backup qb)
cowboys.........24
bucs................20
panthers.........21

So beside a showboat game against NE, only Mark Sanchez, Trent Edwards, and Josh Freeman we held to less than 20 points. Such great QBs that's why they are starting.

14 pages of celebration over 5 coach firings. Hmmmm.....this is the most celebration I have seen around here all last season. Hope this means something.

I hate to see anyone lose their job, but their units under-performed at best. I can't say they were loaded with talent, but their results were poor. Simple as that.

Boys, boys, this isn't a day for pointing fingers! This is a day for pointing the way to the door. It's a slightly belated Christmas with a little something in everybody's stockings. It's a slightly belated New Year's. We're ringing out the old and bringing in the new. (Although I've gotta say a couple of you really lost me with that Jeff Fisher comment and like...) Rejoice Who Dats, rejoice!

For me, I can finally get rid of JP's "It's the coaching stupid" quote I've had for my signature for what seems like years. Maybe I should post a poll to select my new one. We haven't had a dumb poll up for a while...

Great news, certainly a bit late for most of our liking, but still nice to see them really shake things up.

The thread though... would be nice to see more discussion on the possibilities going forward rather than pickering about what once was.

I feel like I'm coming out of a fog. Never thought I would see the crossfit mafia get broken up! Belated, but I have to admire Payton for having the guts to run the ship like the way an NFL ship should be run, where you get results or you get your pink slip. The Saints' special teams have been rolling into the Dome on Sunday mornings, wildly unprepared and freeballing, winging it by the seat of the pants, as long as Sean Payton's been loyal to McMahon. We've all seen it.

This could be the start of a big change.

I'm just worried about these guys families. It's hard on a family to be uprooted like that. I also worry about the emotional and mental toll it can take on them. Not to mention the loss of income. It's hard to start over at those guys age.

Yeah, but it comes with the territory....I've known the family of an NFL assistant coach before, and their families are sorta used to it, like a military family gets used to moving around. It's also a lot like a musician (lots of traveling, away from home) or big-time architects and contractors (like at the level of skyscrapers and churches and stuff) who go for months at a time where ever the big site is. And trust me, any ex-NFL coach can land a smaller gig (college, high school) anytime. That type of experience is very much in demand.

Seriously? I could care less about their "mental and financial well being" they are shopping for million dollar homes as we speak. Their kids are probably legacies at whatever colleges their dads graduated from and will probably be able to go tuition free. There are tons of people I feel bad for but a bunch of NFL coaches I don't even know aren't very high on the list.

This is all a calculated plan by SP to destroy the Saints!! First: 3 consecutive 7 - 9 seasons! Second: Fire all the coaches! Third: Resign and take the LA Rams job!!

CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Anyone who doesn't think Sean's job is on the line, bull****. This is proof it is. This is one of the last moves coaches make to try and get a different result before their ass is thrown out. This was done because he had no choice, management is not happy with the results. Get better is what they just told him.

Maybe. I tend to think this is because the time of Drew Brees making us all but instant contenders regardless of who else is on the field is coming to an end. Sooner than later it is coming to an end.
