"To me, he's a third-round talent, but probably will go higher," said an AFC general manager. "He has gotten a lot of hype, but he plays soft. He's too much like Paul Posluszny for me. He's a good player and will have a lot of tackles, but most of them will come four yards downfield. He's not an impact-at-the-line guy like a Ray Lewis, Luke Kuechly, Jon Beason or Brian Urlacher." |
Re: 2018 NFL Draft Prospects - Saints
I always felt Vander Esch was a 2nd rd prospect. The comparisons he is getting to Urlacher is a bit extreme. For some scouts ranking this guy ahead of Rashaan Evans is a head scratcher for me. Look at Vander's body of work ... nothing screams "1st round talent".
If he's there in the 3rd, totally different conversation. |

Then Evans was surrounded with four and five star recruits at Alabama that could mask his mistakes, inabilities on that terrific Bama defense... Whereas Vander Esch has gone from heavy slot WR to TE to MLB in three seasons, with significant progression at Boise State... But again, I go back to the fact that scouts came a second time with purpose of seeing him run and he declined - very concerning... And I'd agree that Vander Esch and Urlacher are two different linebackers and that the game has now evolved more to Vander Esch style vs Urlacher who'd struggled as the game became more about passing... |
