I know the food at training camp is pretty much whatever you want every single meal and like he said, he can eat. He's going to be force.

I'm pretty cool with the aggressive strategy to get Davenport by the Saints. Today's NFL is not a place for conservative approaches. You roll the dice and you live with what you get. I mean, the Browns just actually took the brash Mayfield at #1. There is a chance Davenport has Jevon Kearse type of impact, so there is upside with this risk.

Report on this guy. 6"6, 265lbs+, freak athlete, aggressive, violent player who plays the run and the pass and when he hits you, you drop. I say. OK. At some point in the NFL, physical talent becomes the key and this dude has some. Any real WhoDat is pumped. Lets go! WhoDat!

Did he play against any pro quality offensive lines (or even individual linemen) in his time at TSU?

No, but neither did Khalil Mack when he played for smalltown BFE college, and he turned out alright.

Something that was being discussed on the radio is how DE are becoming like trying to get a good QB. There are not a lot of truly difference makers out there, so when you can get your hands on one, you gotta pay for it.

Nobody should be double guessing this pick. We have been asking for help on the other end for Cam every yr and we never got one because it never worked out right. The only other way for us to land one would be to have a super crap season, so we could have a early pick. Payton stated he put in a LOT of time on this kid. Good enough for me.

It's not the player I am disappointed about. Davenport is worth the 14th pick. I just hate the trade to get him. Green Bay traded up from 27th and gained a 7th rd pick and only lost a 3rd and 6th a four spot difference. Why couldn't saints offer 2019 2nd rd instead of a 1st?

Re: Saints draft Marcus Davenport after trading up in first round

People will have issues with whatever you do but this FO group has been very successful at idendifying needs and the right talent to fill those needs. Moving up to get a first round talent locked into a rookie contract with the option year is smart business, our cap number will be better next year and we will have the room to makeup for the lack of a 1st round draft pick by being early in on the free agent market and target our biggest need with a known quality vet. They (FO) have been hitting on all cylinders and we have fewer and fewer hole to fill, no reason to be anything but optimistic ... Championship!!!!

2. He's brawn, and brains: Davenport may be an imposing figure on the gridiron, but he's got a softer side off of it. He's been known to keep a journal and is pretty active online as an activist. He's been seen wearing feminist-themed t-shirts, and he's*posted his own poetry on his Twitter account.*

Jeff Huehn

Oh crap... just what the Saints need... a pseudo feminist activist poet.

Just think guys with our Secondary and if we can keep our LB's healthy and Davenport on the line with Cam we could be the best defense in the league but we're not done yet! The organization has decided a win now approach so we may not have any picks left for next year after they're done!

Hard to say it’s a win-now approach when we draft a developmental pass rusher from a Conference USA school.

I think everyone is 50 50 on his development. I think by week 1 he'll have all the development he needs and the first few games maybe a learning experience but remember we'll have 2 or 3 edge rushers going after the QB on every play.

Not a big fan. Too high of a price. Looks stiff. Competition was low even for college. Got a lot of his stats standing up which lessened the already low resistance. But, I get it. It was a need. Everyone who lined up opposite Jordan missed time. The staff clearly loved the guy. He'll certainly get his opportunity.

So for those of us who like to keep track of this sort of thing... It doesn’t look like we had any private workouts or even meetings with Davenport in the draft process.

There is a connection however: UTSA head coach Frank Wilson and our D-Line coach Ryan Nielsen coached together at Ole Miss.

The coach is why I like Breeland Speaks DE from Ole Miss in the 4th. We might not do it now because of Marcus but it can never hurt to have too many. Competition is good and makes them hungry!

On record, I don't like the cost of the Marcus Davenport pick at all - But I'm a Saints fan, I'm on board...:D

I'll critique it with y'all once we have a body of NFL work by Davenport so this will likely be a three year discussion...

Davenport will be measured against other defensive linemen in this draft and we'll see if the costs of two No. 1s was worth the move...

But in light of Payton's defense of the pick by drawing on a National Debt analogy, I have no doubt in my mind now he's a Democrat/RINO...

That was probably the last thing Payton could've said to this fan to defend the pick though...

Beyond the value assessment for the Saints, I enjoyed sitting there with my wife (telling the TV it will certainly not be a QB) while 80% of the talking heads (experts, including Mayok) on the panel were explaining why it would definitely be a QB (she’s looking at me like I’m a fool) and like a 1/2 time SuperBowl squib kick... Sean Payton shut hem up.

In that, there was definitely personal solace in the pick, my friend...

I don't like giving up two firsts for one player. But then I didn't like giving up the next season's second for one player last year. And that worked out pretty well.

Re: Saints draft Marcus Davenport after trading up in first round

A lot of folks complained we didn't get a defensive end last year, some of the same folks complaining we got a defensive end this year. Saints needed a pass rusher in the worst way. Davenport is gonna be good. I dare say "special". I'm not buying the raw narrative. He competed in competitive 5A Texas High school ball, 4 years of college & was Def POY in his conference.

He'll be coached up, develop a few moves & has Cam as a mentor.

Super high ceiling & only 21. Looks like a dawg.

I get it, for several reasons
1. Win now, obviously

2. After Drew we should have a scary good defense (we'll need it)

3. He was the 2nd best DE in the draft

4. After the last couple of drafts, we are loaded with young talented prospects. Losing a draft pick doesn't hurt as much.

5. Our coaches know this kid, and his College coach well. We have a real good feel for his potential.

6. Our D-line coach, Ryan Nielson is notorious for developing young DL players

Good Points in why the selection was made.

I respectfully hope not. We've got like 9 already. And we've drafted 4 of them. And don't we use Kikaha more as a DE than a LB? I hope the answer to DE is on the team by now for hell's sake.

We've got 9 DE's for two positions. By comparison, we 13 OL for five positions.

I get that many of them will be cut or PS, but I'm just saying. Let's get this DE hunt over with. God, I hope Davenport is the one.

I love the posts I'm seeing where folks are saying I love the pic but we should have offered less. LOL. Give me a break and put some faith in our FO. Or maybe give yourself a little less credit.

DO YOU REALLY THINK THESE GUYS DON"T KNOW HOW TO NEGOTIATE?! They know what they're doing, which is why they are where they are.

Plays the run well, true DE size and athleticism. Physical beast. True pass rushers are very hard to find. Coach Neilson has a serious player to work with.

Damn the expense.

A lot of folks were upset about both Lattimore and Kamara last year. They aren't now. Any player can be a bust. Is he Clowney or Mingo? We shall see.

It should be noted that most of the negatives we're reading about Davenport are about what it cost us to acquire him, not whether or not he's a great pick for us.

I think the consensus is that we got a fantastic prospect at a crucial position which also happens to be a need for us.

We probably over-paid a little to get him, but thats certainly debatable.

Its my humble opinion that if we had numerous holes on our roster, we over-paid. But since we don't have glaring holes up and down this roster, we didn't over-pay.

Its the old Rebuild vs Re-load. We aren't rebuilding, we're re-loading and Davenport is a key piece of ammo.

Exactly. He’s played against nobody’s and he’s from a nobody school. Reports on him say he is raw and will need to develop. I don’t love what we have up for him. At that price you want as close to a day one difference maker as you can get. Not just someone to use on third downs for a year until he gets it.
Especially givin Brees age and the fact we are in win now mode.
Next year might be to late.
Hope I am wrong. The FO did a great job last year but for several years prior they didn’t do that great.

To say they should have offered less is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Of course they offered less. Im also sure GB wanted more. It’s called NEGOTIATION. You don’t just take the first offer without countering

You make a great point here Danno. Nobody talks about the actual player but rather the trade compensation. I’m guilty as well. All the draft gurus had Davenport as a top 15 player but for some reason giving up next year’s 1st makes him lesser of a player it seems. I don’t know... I’m pretty conflicted still.
