Re: Drew Is Coming Back For The 2020 Season

I want to see pretty much a two QB system where Hill proves he can be a legit Qb. Throw him in for the deep ball and pepper in a few plays where he pitches to our RB and then goes up front to help the offensive line. I have never seen a Qb who is a legit threat through the air with the physicality and ability to block like Hill.
We are an anomaly at Qb. Nobody has run a dual QB system with an All Pro Qb who knows he only has a year or two left and a player like Hill. Ego issues will be a non factor. It could work.

More balance, wearing defenses out late with the run game will become paramount and it helps your defense stay fresh.

Free Agency (G, WR) and the upcoming draft will be key.
we only passed 40+ four times last year
AK was obviously not 100%, and Murray didn't get into the swing of things until about game 6

We're fine

I think it flew over your head Scott. *Sarcasm *

The Saints with Sean Payton are a "pass happy" offense. It's been that way most of his tenure. I've never understood that with him. Murray showed incredible promise when AK was out but for somehow the HC thinks the offense is better when AK is out there.

When we allowed Ingram to sign elsewhere, they decided to make AK the feature back. All of the stubbornness has led to force feeding.

Compare previous years when with the feature. The solution should have been to keep that formula with L Train. IMO the guy was criminally under utilized.

Our offense is getting more and more reliant on packages and mis matches.

L Train carried the ball 7 times against his former team in the playoffs made no sense whatsoever. Just because you are behind a score (7 vs Vikings) you don't need to abandon it. You know this man would have been motivated to run hard right there.

By the way, it's kind of hard to get in any rhythm when you touch the ball less than 10 times a game. He didn't get over 9 attempts until the Chicago game.

It is what it is but getting beat in your house wild card round to a marginal Kurt Cousins is hardly "fine".

Apparently we are still getting Burrow and him and Drew will split snaps. Also “anyone who thinks Hill will be taking snaps at Qb is delusional”.
But the Saints drafting Burrow is totally rational. Oh BTW, Burrow already knows the Saints offense.

The Saints haven't really been "pass happy", by comparison to the rest of the league, the last few years. It just seems that way because it was that way for so long.

NFL rankings by pass attempts
2019 - 13th
2018 - 21st
2017 - 19th

They're much more of a rushing team.

NFL rankings by rushing attempts
2019 - 15th
2018 - 6th
2017 - 5th

Drew's not being asked to do what he used to. He needs to be enough of a threat to keep the defense from stacking the box. With that quick release he had the lowest sack rate in the league. His accuracy is still insane. Even with the shortened passing game he still averaged 8.8 ay/a, for 5th in the league. As a frame of reference, Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes averaged 8.9 and they sling the ball. He was the offensive player of the month for December, which shows he didn't wear down much as the season went on.

His coming back is absolutely the best case scenario for the 2020 Saints, in my humble opinion.

Re: Drew Is Coming Back For The 2020 Season

This excellent news! Drew Brees gives the Saints a better chance to win than almost every single QB in the league. He's certainly better than any available QB.

Not only that, I absolutely love the man. What he's done for the Saints organization in his tenure there is immeasurable. I will be be saddened beyond measure when some of you guys get your wish and the Saints plug in a garden-variety QB into the system.

Not crazy about how much we are going to end up paying Brees and how much it'll cost against the cap, but if they are serious about this thing, then they need to make a serious point to address the weaknesses that have stopped our playoff run 3 years in a row.
We've went all in the last 2 seasons and it has resulted in more playoff failures.

2018 was an 'all in' year. Last year this team embraced their victimhood of the non-call and spent the whole off season belly-aching about it to the point they started to believe their own BS. That's the only conclusion I can come up with as for why we didn't make any trades before trade deadline, passing on a guy like Emmanuel Sanders who came back to shred us. They truly believed they were good enough to reach the SB with this roster, all cause "the refs robbed us".

Compare us to the Chiefs. They were one Dee Ford boneheaded move away from the SB, but you didn't hear them constantly bring it up like our team did with the non-call. instead, they started making serious moves to fix their issues. They brought in a new defensive coordinator, cut several guys and made moves, stacking their offense with even more weapons and they also made moves before the trade deadline last year. Whether Shanahan screwed around and the 49ers choked the SB is beyond the question, KC made the moves to get there and win it. We didn't make any serious moves that would've helped us before the trade deadline, just sat there wanting everyone to feel sorry for us over the non-call. That was this team's identity last year.

Those playoff failures can be contributed from 3 main reasons.

#1. Payton getting out-coached.
#2. Our HOF QB playing badly in the playoffs. Brees playoff numbers the last 3 seasons speak for themselves.
#3. Defense crapping the bed in crunch time.

All 3 happened in all 3 of our playoff losses. We were one Alshon Jeffrey dropped pass away from being one and done in 2018. Even going back to 2017, we came very close to being one and done to Carolina if their kicker had made his field goals and Cam threw an accurate pass on their final drive.

For some reason, we play bad in the playoffs. Kinda reminds me of Peyton Manning led teams. Brees has put together a playoff record that almost mirrors Manning's, just don't have the 4 SB appearances. They are very similar QBs - both have topped off statistically dominant regular seasons with bad postseason play.

Brees should've retired. We're going to look back at this half way through the season when the offense is struggling and be saying this when our 41 year old QB isn't amounting to much but dink and dunk passes.

We have a young team that we successfully rebuilt with beginning in 2016. We hit home runs with the 2017 draft.

This team is not terrible and when they had that 5-0 stretch with Bridgewater, the future really looked bright.

I keep remembering last year that Brees pretty much rushed back into the starting job after Teddy went 5-0. He had that one big statistical game against a crappy Cards team, but lost in all the bragging about his stats, Brees only had like 2 completions over 10 yards in that game (his other pass for 10+ yards was an interception). His stats were inflated from YAC. A week later, we didn't score a single TD against Atlanta at home but at least he didn't throw a pick and got to pad those passing yard stats. Our #1 rival and we **** the bed against them. At home.

With Bridgewater in, we ran a balanced offense.

With Brees in, went back to pass happy with our QB who can't hit anything beyond 10 yards and usually don't throw beyond the LOS anymore.

Seriously; for all the people who constantly criticized Bridgewater last year for checking it down, Brees has been a checkdown king since the end of 2018 which is when his decline began to hit hard. Brees has never really been the same again since November of 2018. The decline began with that Cowboys game and carried on. He occasionally still has good games against sub-par teams, but so did Manning at the end of 2014 and 2015. Aaron Rodgers still occasionally has the great game against a crap team too and it convinces everyone that he's back to his prime.

I'm not convinced and wasn't all last year that Brees was playing at this super elite level people talked about. He ranked high in QBR and completion percentage only cause he focuses on short passes and rarely throws beyond the LOS. The best QB last year brought home the Lombardi, but his stats weren't perfect looking cause Mahomes isn't afraid to gun it down field.

I think this is a mistake and we're going to be rebuilding in 2021. Taysom Hill is not a starting QB.

IMO Brees isn't retiring cause Brady isn't and he is worried about those volume stats and records. I don't give a **** about those records. All I want is another ring! A second Lombardi brought to New Orleans! These old guys are greedy and selfish. They need to retire and let a young gun have a shot. Makes me sick to think we are about to let a 26 year old QB walk, who is a proven winner and starting QB, all for a 41 year old past his prime former legend who dinks and dunks all day now, but at least he puts up respectable stats I guess before we crap the bed in the post season.
