Frankly I can't see it but if he can heal back to 100%, he is going to improve someones defense, quick, fast and in a hurry.
If he drops out of the First Round the by all means take a chance on him. But if he's there at #12, then you have to pass.

Normally I agree. But we're in a 2 or 3 year window with Brees so I have no problem passing on a project for a more NFL ready prospect.

I'm all about drafting for 2 or 3 years down the road, but the whole nerve damage thing is inordinately risky. If we had some extra picks, and were already stocked with talent on defense then sure, I'd crawl over broken glass to pick him n the 2nd.

I just don't think its wise with our current situation. We have a lot of young players on defense that may develop very nicely. Do you give up on them to draft a risky feast or famine player?

Re: Trade Down at 12?

Rookie Draft Picks...

First round picks should be starters as rookies coming out of training camp...

Second round picks should be starters by mid season or key rotational players...

Third round picks should be playing strong minutes in relief and able to make spot starts by the end of their rookie seasons...

Fourth and Fifth round picks should be providing quality depth and have at least some kind of impact by the end of their rookie seasons...

Sixth and Seventh round picks are your developmental, special teams and medical redshirts...

Exception: Quarterbacks (First Rounders should be starting by midseason)

Look, we developed enough talent for other kids during the Mora years, let the other kids develop the talent...

We should be reloaders, not rebuilders...

JP - valid points but if our 1st rd pick is missing 6, 7 games makes or breaks us, then we are already in trouble. Yes we need our 1st rd pick to make an impact but even great players don't have huge impacts to change a teams season. If we ever expect our defense to become great, it will help big time getting a top rated player fall to us at 12.

Re: Trade Down at 12?

First thru fourth round picks must see the field and have an impact from day one. starter or not he must have an impact. If things go well 1 maybe 2 have starter written on them by the end of year one. The other 2 or 3 must be depth upgrades and rotational players pushing for playing time. busts in the first 4 rounds are killers

If the rest can give you an improvement of depth with promise or even that rare diamond in the rough even better. Showing solid skills worth developing.

Re: Trade Down at 12?

Well it appears the eagles are moving up in the draft and swapping with miami. So that is a huge blow to obvious trade possibilities involving QBs

Byron Maxwell, Kiko Alonso to be traded to Dolphins - NFL.com

Then add philli move trading Murry to Tenn
Titans to acquire RB DeMarco Murray from Eagles - NFL.com

The eagles should be pick heavy. It will be interesting to see how these moves all shake out.

Upon further review, maybe we will.
While it's true we haven't traded down for more picks in a decade, this will be the first draft Jeff Ireland has had with a full year of evaluation and scouting. Since he's now the top draft guy on the staff, I think we can throw history out.

Re: Trade Down at 12?

IF the Saints decide to trade down, this is the year to do it. The skill level at 12, isn't all that much different than at 20.

One of these teams is gonna fall in love with a QB.
