Sitting in the stands in the Superdome, I knew my NFL fandom was over within moments of the infamous no-call. My family, season ticket holders for decades, hasn’t attended a game since. Some still watch, although with a lot less enthusiasm. My only connection to the NFL is to pay enough attention to discuss the Saints with my mother, who isn’t giving up on her 55 years of Saints quite yet. This year has only fortified the impression that the NFL seeks to influence games while maintaining the plausible deniability of “incompetent” referees. Unfortunately, I now don’t believe Superbowl XLIV was real either. The Saints were brief benefactors of the NFL machinations because of Katrina. Life is certainly better without the emotional high and low of really being invested in being a Saint’s fan but, just like when you discover Santa Claus isn’t real, Christmas and fall just aren’t the same. I was a fool, but a happy fool. I am a little jealous of the folks who can’t see what I see. Good to see you post again. Every time I hear you on the radio, I think about Big Woodrow’s and the fun times. The world has moved on. Cheers and happy new year. |
