Re: Observations from the Saints preseason loss to the Texans

* The first series with Dalton looked good, crisp and effective.

* Ian Book plays like an UDFA QB from West Dakota Culinary Institute.

* Trevor Penning suffers from some serious dead feet in pass pro. Flips his hips too soon when rushed on the outside and struggles with the inside move. Basically everything I saw on film before the draft showed itself on the field. Don't see a day 1 starter right now.

* Payton Turner looked better as a runstopper than a passrusher.

* No passrush with the backups. At all.

* Chase Hansen looked pretty good and might have been our best defender.

* Tony Jones was the only backup RB that even got me a little excited.

W.T. Sherman is my favorite General. After all he did order Atlanta to be burned to the ground.

I didn't watch the entire game; hopefully we didn't get any injuries.

Wasn’t able to watch the game but have it recorded.

No pass rush? In a year where your DC becomes your HC… That is deeply troubling.

The first string d-line was not dressed out at all. Neither was the rest of the key starters for that matter. The Texans offense did nothing until late in the 4th quarter when it was nothing but scrubs in the game.

For those that didn't see the game last night, Nielsen handled the defensive playcalling. Dennis Allen said he will be the playcaller starting the third preseason game and throughout the season.

None of what you typed has anything to do with a fundamental pass rush.

Have you watched the game yet? You commented about no pass rush while admitting you hadn't even seen the game. If the 4th string players were fundamentally sound they wouldn't be 4th stringers now, would they. However, the entire defense performed quite well, especially early on when actual roster players were in the game. There was adequate pass rush. There's more to a pass rush than sacks, right? It's hard to rack up sacks when you are getting three and outs. I know they didn't actually go "three and out", but the Texans were really unable to do much of anything on offense until the final two minutes of the game.
